of the Mekons, Lu Edmonds performed a galvanising and entrancing one-man set
which included a wonderful version of 'Stack 0 Lee'. I've been trying to get him to come and do something similar on the radio ever since. As he divides
his time between producing and managing the Tuvan group Yat Kha, and touring
the world with Billy Bragg, Lu does not have many spare moments, but tonight
he finally made it, bringing his guitar and a Turkish instrument that looked
and sounded like a banjo, aided and abetted by fellow Bloke Ben Mandelson, wielding
a 1923 mandolin. These two have followed interweaving paths since they toured
the world as Uncle and Hijaz of the 3 Mustaphas 3, and their droll manner disguises
but does not hide their awesome dexterity and emotional delivery. Lu sang in
Russian and Arabic as well as an approximate form of American for that long-awaited
'Stack O Lee'. Billy Bragg's a lucky man to have these guys in his band. Listener

a concept album.
