Having just been listening to it for a review for Songlines, I can confirm that it’s an excellent compilation, surprisingly free of most of those nasty 1980s keyboard sounds etc that so blighted most US and UK pop music.

Is that this?

I tipped it to Howard a month ago at http://www.charliegillett.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=17228#p97295 and remember the discussion in the forum some while ago. I wondered what had happened to it. Those sleeves are familiar.

Of course, I played one of Charlie's comps today, Beyond The Horizon — pulled out a track I hadn't noticed before, "Inel Inel De Aur — Bucovina Dub" by Shantel vs Rona Hartner & DJ Click, which naturally lead to the necessity of finding the whole album! Charlie really did make very fine compilations.

LATER EDIT: very annoying — the 80s World Music Classics: When The World Was Young is not showing up on my usual US sources.

EVEN LATER: Now found on at least on Amazon US at http://www.amazon.com/80s-World-Music-Classics-When/dp/B004J0Q6P0/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IHN04KG34XZMK&colid=1EI3VBZ1VM5AF although not on Import CDs, my super budget supplier which usually has Nascente at several dollars off the Amazon price (as well as almost everything else, but I always check). Anyway, no need to panic. Please form an orderly queue for the checkout process.

After mucking about with the search a bit, I eventually found the original topic in which Lewis R proposed this 80s World Music Classics: When The World Was Young compilation. Both Gordon Neill and Neil Foxlee quickly and tantalizingly pointed to another earlier thread (or perhaps two threads) of discussion that unfortunately gives a 404. Somehow the Great Forum Meltdown of Late 2009 seems to have rejiggered things enough that even the World music... where did it all begin? topic doesn't appear where it ought to — or at least it wasn't obvious to me. There appears to be a great chunk of topics missing from the Best of Everything and Anything index in that time period. Anyway, the suggestion fell on fertile ground, perhaps already ploughed, and there's a pretty interesting discussion at http://www.charliegillett.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8882&start=0&hilit=Nascente. Sadly, it casts light on what we've lost both as regards Charlie as a person and DJ and as a forum.

Last time I spoke to Roger Armstrong at Ace, which was a few moths back, he was about to start whittling down the multitude of tracks proposed by Charlie for possible inclusion on this comp.

Jonathan, it's always worth trying to swap out the "phpBB2" part of the address (old board, pre-December 09 meltdown) with "bb" thusly:-

Was a bit premature on the release date -it's April 18.

I thought it was a month earliier because finished copies have been around for some time and it has already been offered as a competition prize and had BBC World Service radio play.

It's a handsome-looking thing, too, with a nice 12 page booklet. So sad that Charlie himself never saw it come to fruition.

looking forward to this one, especially after Howard's reassurance that it's "free of most of those nasty 1980s keyboard sounds"

Jonathan, you can find it for few dollars less on CDWow

But at least in the sleeve note I managed to correct the folklore that has for years mis-attributed the quote that "it was like hearing Muddy Waters for the first time" to the blessed John Peel when in fact it was Paul Lashmar in the Observer, on one of its very first reviews.

As mentioned above, there are ten copies to be won (closing date 31st March) at http://www.frootsmag.com/content/issue/competition/

Indeed it was Lashmar, who claims to have been responsible for the very first mention of Baaba Maal's name in a newspaper outside West Africa.

Must have been around 1985/6, when Paul won Reporter of the Year with David Leigh at the UK Press Awards - not for discovering Baaba, but for their investigative scoop on how since 1937 MI5 had been vetting BBC appointments. They discovered that there was even an MI5 operative called Brigadier Ronnie Stonham who had an office in room 105 in Broadcasting House. It was Stonham's Orwellian job to check appointments against the MI5 date base and he had full powers of veto. Quite extraordinary.

Oh, great tip! Just the kind I like — thanks a lot. There goes the morning!

Yes, I see your point — and Djam Leelii was/is a fabulous album. Still gets regular play around here. I have your Rogue vinyl release of it plus the two later Mango/Palm CDs plus a cassette (which is somewhere around here — I know!). Me? Obsessed? Whatever makes you think that? Well, now you mention it, I see that "N'sel Fik" gets represented twice on the sleeve artwork, which seems very generous. That sleeve art does kind of get the accumulative juices flowing, however. No, no, no, I really am not obsessed!

Thank you both for reassurance and advice. Now, we'll see how I do with that little problem I seem to have of accumulative obsession.

12 page booklet sounds especially good and/or useful.

And now I'm supposed to exercise patience? This is not a personality characteristic that goes well with accumulative obsession!

What a goldmine Con points us to! Quite overwhelming but fabulously worthwhile for anyone with historical interest in "World Music", whatever that is.

I'd just like to add a link to Nigel's posting about John Peel on African Music in 1975 and subsequent comments since Lewis R mentioned that he'd read those with interest:

http://www.charliegillett.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8778&p=50132&hilit=+John+Peel#p50132

It's particularly nice to read Charlie's words from back in the day.

Just to add a note of recognition and solace for the 1 year anniversary - 17/03

Looking forward to hearing the album - a nice kind of tribute anyway and good timing

Good to see Charlie is still in everyone's thoughts one year on. Those compilations sound like ideal tributes to a man who is still greatly missed. A small tribute on my audio blog for those of you who know where to find it.
