And isn't it strange how certain people on the US radical right are keen to insist that the obviously mentally-ill Loughner bears sole responsibility for his acts whilst evading any responsibility themselves for their own sick and inflammatory words.

I think it was under Reagan that US broadcasters were "freed" from the responsibility to be balanced in their news and current affairs coverage. As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

Here's the relevant passage (starting seven paragraphs from the end), about which I'm having second thoughts:

"Tea parties believe in small government. We believe in returning to the principles of our Founding Fathers. We respect them. We revere them. Shoot me in the head before I stop talking about the Founders. Shoot me in the head if you try to change our government.

I will stand against you and so will millions of others. We believe in something. You in the media and most in Washington don't. The radicals that you and Washington have co-opted and brought in wearing sheep's clothing -- change the pose. You will get the ends.

You've been using them? They believe in communism. They believe and have called for a revolution. You're going to have to shoot them in the head. But warning, they may shoot you.

They are dangerous because they believe. Karl Marx is their George Washington. You will never change their mind. And if they feel you have lied to them -- they're revolutionaries. Nancy Pelosi, those are the people you should be worried about."

So:
"We" = tea-party people
"You" = media people and most Washington politicians
"They" = revolutionary communist radicals who have been brought into the Obama administration (Beck would probably include Obama himself in this category - see next post).

So what Beck is actually saying in his rambling and often incoherent rant is that these revolutionary wolves in sheep's clothing are going to have to be shot - but by Washington people.

Re my suggestion that Beck was implicitly including Obama himself in the category of revolutionary communist wolves in sheep's clothing, it's worth noting that a number of commentators on the radical right see Obama in this light because of his days as a community organizer in Chicago, where he was apparently influenced by the ideas of the radical community organizer par excellence, Saul Alinsky ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Alinsky ).

Thus one Colin Hanna, president of Let Freedom Ring and frequent speaker at Tea Party rallies:

"Throughout Barack Obama’s campaign for the White House, he never tired of referring to the three years he spent as a community organizer on Chicago’s South Side and its relevance to his life since then.

However generic the term may sound to the average ear, it had a very specific meaning to young Barack Obama. It was a term of art used by the self-described Marxist tactician Saul Alinsky, author of “Rules for Radicals” and erstwhile mentor of Obama."

BECK: And let me tell you something. This ties directly into--this is community organizing [see above]. These are thugs. We are creating a thugocracy. And mark my words, if you don't stand up now, you will run out of time. They will gather strength and you will not be able to stand against them.

There's a couple things that come to mind on this. One, they're gathering strength and they're going inside our government. Their chief organizer is the president of the United States. SEIU [Service Employees International Union] is part of ACORN [Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now] . ACORN and SEIU -- stop separating them in your head. They are the same group of people. SEIU is the one that is pushing health care through. They're the ones that met with the drug companies. They're the ones -- these are the people that are strong-arming. When Wal-Mart decides to meet and decide on whether or not they're for health care, who meets with them? SEIU. These people are thugs.

Please don't let this message fall on deaf ears. Please. I fear that there will come a time when I cannot say things that I am currently saying. I fear that it will come to television and to radio, and I will stop saying these things. Understand me clearly. Hear me now. If I ever stop saying these things, you will know why. Because I will have made a choice that I can only say certain things, and I haven't lost all of the rights. But know that these things are true. And if you hear me stop saying these things, it's because I can no longer say them to you. But hear them between the sentences. Hear them, please. I will be screaming them to you.
