Funny, I've forgotten that thread - life affirming is not necessarily the same as making happy and having a song in your heart, at least in my heart. But who's counting?

Approach with caution:

A song too heart wrenching for casual listening

That's it! That's the song I was trying to think of but couldn't, when I started this thread. Thanks for that Ian M

Does anyone else remember John Peel playing it the night Thatcher got elected?

I've no answer, I'm just curious.

I don't know about anybody else, but when I'm happy I'm digging in the garden, dancing around to offensively loud music while I clean the house, drumming, and generally speaking, out and about contributing to the notion that happiness is a form of idiocy or in some people's minds, harassment upon their person. I'm probably more often happy than sad. Sadness does get my attention though and this thread had me listening and thinking and I do love 'sad' songs very much. Whereas the thread on dance music and happiness, well - one song and I'm up and off the old computer...was this a rhetorical question, Norman?

No, I don't have an answer. But we are openly discussing our vulnerability (if that's the right word to use) and preparedness to have a bit of a sob, and the music that triggers it.

PS edit: Oh f**k all that above, let's party (in our misery, of course). Here's another. I don't get the boo-hoos from Bobby Bland, but I do from The Band's version. The vocal is so plaintive I can hardly bear it

The cover of the West Side Story song 'Somewhere' by Tom Waits, off 'Blue Valentine', even though usually I much prefer his later records.

'What a wonderful world' generally, but particularly the cover on the posthumous album by Joey Ramone. In fact knowing that you're never going to hear from a favourite musician ever again makes me sad, so I'd also have to go for 'Hurt' and 'Bridge over Troubled Water' off Johnny Cash's final album.

Jamie, glad to be of assistance. I definitely didn't hear it on Thatcher election night, but it must have been one of Peelie's faves, because I first heard in the early eighties on one of his shows. Although i never owned a copy, I have never forgotten hearing that track, and burnishing the singer's name in my mind. Funny how just hearing it once all those years ago stuck with me ever since. It just has that quality.
He had another favourite track, which I have never been able to track down. On the opposite side of the coin it was wonderfully happy instrumental track from Vietnam, which he played from time to time. Simple and melodious, guaranteed to lift your spirits, if you know what it was, I would love to hear it again.

I'll vote for Cinematic Orchestra's "To Build A Home", which is acted out along with "Breathe" in this heartbreaking video created by Up The Resolution:

Incidentally, when John Peel died, I remember Mary Anne Hobbs playing Mogwai's "Hunted By A Freak" which somehow had a tear inducing poignancy to it.

Finally, I remember when Charlie had to suddenly pull out of his Radio London show through illness, and Gerry Lyseight played Jorge Ben's "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", which also seemed fitting and carrying unspoken emotion:

Johnny Cash; Hurt

I must be in a sentimental mood tonight. I don't know why but found this song. This thread was nice, the way it got people here to reveal what moves their heart.

I almost started a new thread called, maybe, "songs that just demolish you", but then I spotted this thread and decided to lift it up.

I have been stuck in Central East lately, and last night I put on the joint album of Iranian Hossein Alizadeh and Armenian Djivan Gasparyan (plus a group of musicians and singers). On the album there is a folk song called "Sari Galin", and oh boy...

There are other more boisterous versions of the song on Youtube (check Alim Qasimov for instance), but to me this very version is the perfecion: pinpoint precision that wrings out the emotional load of the melody.

Beautiful music, Kas. And shockingly in contrast with all the bilious comments posted below by people still squabbling about obscure border disputes from centuries ago.

Isn't it just? The amount of petty hate mongering on that one alone truly makes one weep...

My word. I know this song so well - Sari Galin. I love it. A young friend of my son's, Armenian, was by the house one day and was so stunned and pleased that I knew what the duduk is and the names of some of its players that he later gave me 5 cd's worth of Armenian music, some with Djivan Gasparyan, and some joint projects like you mention and Erkan Ogur, a Parseghian record comp, for example. I treasure them for this is my go to music for what has been called 'the going home feeling'. I know some people find the duduk (and compositions like this that you posted) sad, saddening, but I don't.

Anyways, now that I know the name of the song, I'm curious to go back and see where I have it. I recognize it with these musicians so maybe it's on one of the compilations.

The comments are typical of those associated with Turkish, Armenian, and Kurdish music posts. Seems to be the way of ethnically obvious sites no matter their origin though. The shit flies, as you've most certainly noticed, in racially/politically tense America. Some of the Indian cooking video sites I frequent occasionally have comments disabled. It does make me want to cry and I hope to hell that YouTube commentary isn't a social barometer but an example of the anonymity internet factor. It's become an unwelcome though often necessary task, steeling myself against the hate to read the comments for information.

Oh, I haven't a video to post. Perhaps I'll think of one later.
