Hot Tips

Moussu T e lei Jovents - Putan de Cancon (Manivette / Le Chant Du Monde)
Winning mix of Marseille blues, folk, rock etc blessed with their gruff charm. Their best since their 1st.

Sun Dub Vol 2 - a Spicy Blend prepared by Dunkelbunt (Poets Club)
A warm global dubby mix fom the Austrian producer / DJ, even if such a description usually sends you running in the opposite direction, I reckon this is worth a try.

Thanks, Jamie. Will check 'em out. I already stumbled across the Sun Dub but had given it only a cursory listen.

Salsa Explosion - The New York Salsa Revolution 1970 -79 (Strut)
Classic Fania latin sounds from start to finish, with much I hadn't heard before, including this version of Oscar Brown Jnr's "Brother Where Are You" one of my current obsession tunes:

I'm pretty stoked to learn that King Sunny Ade will have what looks like a new double CD, Baba Mo Tunde, released on September 28 — just a little too late for my birthday, but never mind!

More details and generous listening samples (whole tracks?) at http://www.rockpaperscissors.biz/index.cfm/fuseaction/current.press_release/project_id/511.cfm .

And the World Circuit AfroCubism release of the mighty and much delayed Africa meets Cuba legendary status seems to now be set for release on October 11 in the UK. I don't see a US date. These stupid territorial restrictions piss me off so much these days! Yeah, I know, gotta do our promotion in a nice tidy way . . . it means a lost sale for Nonesuch in the US as far as I'm concerned. No word yet on Cheikh Lo's Jamm having a US release either!

It's looking as though the much delayed Quantic Presents Tropical Funk Experience compilation from Nascente will see release at the end of September. Quantic is such a great DJ. Earlier, I said some slightly critical things about his Dog With A Rope album, they're not true. It's helluva fine.

Some info and a tracklist for Quantic Presents Tropical Funk Experience at http://www.piccadillyrecords.com/shop/product.php?pid=71289

and from the usual 5,139 other sources as well!

Yeah, I was wondering what had happened to this. It was supposed to be out back in April or something and I expected it to be an essential part of my Colombian summer. But it never showed. Looks like I'll be having a Colombian autumn as well......

I think I prefer the original artwork though:

Talking of Colombia.....have you seen this bargain, Señor Version?

Yup, got that bargain, thank you, Taiyo. Definitely gives one a spin around the wide, wide world of cumbia. Interesting how malleable the form is. It does get a bit cheesy a bit too easy sometimes I feel.

I think the new cover of Quantic Presents Tropical Funk Experience is to fit the corporate identity of the Funk Experience line more closely. Not sure I like one more than the other or either of them much at all!

For other US residents: The AfroCubism release will be out in the US on October 19. Not such a bad wait.

More details and links to audio and video clips at http://www.nonesuch.com/artists/afrocubism where a certain Nigel Williamson is quoted — saying pretty much the obvious of course, after all this is a PR page from the record company.

Just got the 2nd volume of Barbes Records' Roots of Chicha compilation (thanks fRoots), on 1st listen it's just as strong as vol 1. More of the same Peruvian twangy guitar take on Colombian cumbia, including a version of La Colegaila which may be familiar from a Colombian version used in a coffee ad back in the 80s.

It's a quote lifted from the 1800 word cover story in the current issue of Songlines, based around a visit to the Cartagena festival in July to see their first-ever gig.

You can also hear more about it on the Songlines podcast here:

http://www.songlines.co.uk

There was some discussion elsewhere on the forum a few weeks ago of the video trailer from the album of Elaides Ochoa singing Al Vaiven de Mi Carreta. I meant to come on at the time and point out that it's an old Nico Saquito song and was the opening track on that Saquito album which World Circuit put out in the late 1980s/early 1990s. It all comes neatly full-circle because Eliades sang backing vocals on the original Saquito version, recorded just before the old man died in 1982.

Shows how little I know. According to the sleevenotes, the Peruvian version of "Coligiala" featured here is the original & it was then covered by numerous Colombians, including Rodolfo y su Tipica as used in the coffee ad:

A fact of near Wisty-esque tedium to most people I suspect, but of great interest to me.
