Quran Burning in Florida church

I've heard of this plan for a couple weeks and it's made me feel very disturbed. What that pastor is planning is far too extreme and hateful and doesn't really reflect the same veiws of Christians.

For years now, I've learned a lot about Islam with help of several Christian groups that have tried helping us both connect the things that are the same.

Isn't the deliberate and pre-meditated stirring up of religious and racial hatred against the law in the US? It is here. But then if that were the case, I guess Glenn Beck would be in jail right now, instead of counting his campaign contributions.

They should burn a few bibles and Books of Moron while they're at it.

This brings back unhappy memories of 1933 and the Nazis' penchant for book-burning.
“No to decadence and moral corruption!” Goebbels enjoined the crowd. “Yes to decency and morality in family and state! I consign to the flames the writings of Heinrich Mann, Ernst Gläser, Erich Kästner.”

I would like to propose a "Burn a Kora Day" especially as Chris's playing is so atrocious. Feel free to add your own suggestions.

'Burn a Cara Day' where CDs by bland nu-folk songstresses are put to the flames.

Burning CDs is not to be encouraged.

That guy just is completely insane! He clearly has his own warped agenda. Everyone is trying to stop him but he just won't listen to anyone and he's trying to use his "Constitutional rights". I hope they can use some loop hole to stop him.

I don't like Glenn Beck.

Never for one moment thought you did, Dayna! But there are lots of people who do.
When these people start up, we have to ask ourselves: What are they selling here? Are they trying to whip up hatred and distrust and division? Who for? Who profits by it?
Sorry if this blindingly obvious!

I know there are some radicals mixed in with people that follow him and others in his group, and he is really out there sometimes.

There were lots of people that came out against this Quran burning.

It's really a reflection of how pathetic America has become that all it can manage is to burn a few Qurans! We need the old pioneer can-do spirit! If this guy was anything other than a blow-hard attached to a big mustache he' be highjacking planes and flying them into tall buildings in the Persian Gulf!

And all Petraeus can do is say,""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort." Listen general, I got news for you . . .

This whole religion and politics thing is so farcical that it really doesn't deserve to be taken seriously besides the unfortunate results on other people's lives.

I really liked your comment.

The Quran burners would in the end probably feel quite at home among their soul brothers, the crowd on the other side of the fence, similar followers of our common Abrahamic tradition, who also like setting things ablaze:

Ouch ! That brought me down to earth with a bump. I've managed to overlook your kora blindspot so far, but the very thought of burning one or that anyone could produce something atrocious on one goes against my grain. I think I'll be redoubling my practicing in any event !

Sorry, Chris, my heretical proposal offended your sensibilities. I like burning CDs (with the little help of my friends) and brash during a day's hedgelaying. Otherwise burning sacred texts and national flags or effegies is just unthinking, ridiculous and offensive (in no particular order). Let's hope the pastor sees the light/error of his ways before Saturday...

Unlikely, I suspect. Having watched him on the news last night I think he is thoroughly enjoying being the centre of attention. Fame, infamy, what's the difference? He may well find out the hard way. Trouble is, so will many thousands of others.

This idiot could be described as a "logical" outgrowth out of the US extreme right's constant Islamophobia - the "Obama is a Muslim" has stoked things and then the Cordoba Centre in Manhattan has allowed them to preach fear and loathing.

The likes of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News suggest that the Cordoba Centre is simply a mosque with extremist links that is trying to built as close as possible to the Ground Zero site so to honour the hijackers and other such lies. Thus they refer to it as the "Ground Zero mosque." This means that American idiots - and there are, unfortunately, a lot of them - don't bother to check the facts, instead getting all worked up about Islamic invaders and dishonouring the dead (ummm how?). That the US constitution guarantees freedom of worship, NY is a multicultural city and more than 300 Muslims died in 9/11 is not discussed either.

The Cordoba Centre will contain a mosque as well as worship spaces for Jews and Christians. A cafe, library, swimming pool. It aims to be a multifaith centre where people can learn more about different faiths. But that's not what the US right mentions. They also don't mention that Osama Bin was originally trained and financed by right wing Americans determined to set this fundamentalist zealot against the Russians. Never did they consider they had created a Frankenstein who might just bite them once the Russians had left Afghanistan.

The US right is both extremely well funded - last week's New Yorker had a feature on the Koch brothers, billionaires behind the Tea Party and other nasties - and extremely intolerant. With the rise of Sarah Palin, Fox News and other extremists are we seeing US fascism taking shape? In the 30s there was a pro-Hitler fascist organisation lead by the aviator Charles Lindenburgh. And the Republican party has often featured politicians - McCarthy, Goldwater, Nixon, Kissinger, Helms etc - who display extreme right tendencies. Scary thought.
