Best cities in the world with a happening Jazz scene?

Postby c hristian » Tue Aug 17, 2010 4:02 pm

HI all. I'm racking my brain, trying to come up with the cities that have the most vibrant jazz scenes, today. That is to say, where the most important contributions to the genre of jazz are being made. I'm not interested in knowing more about New York City, of course, or for the glorious cities of Jazz's yesteryear. I'm asking about which WORLD cities (all are of this world, but you know, world music ...)are the place(s) for jazz right now.

One that comes to my mind, though I can't back it up very well, is Capetown, SA.

How tiny is that phone anyway?

I'd start with Krakow or Kraków or Cracow (depending on personal preference).

Well, not through personal experience, but merely an inclination, I would check out Berlin, maybe Warsaw, and have a look at the Scandinavian countries, given their excellent output in recent years.

Welwyn Garden City..."hardly a walk on the wild side" - Norman Stanley Fletcher (Porridge) but the place that had a modern jazz club at its heart for forty years (1969 -2009) is on the up again. Clark Tracey (son of Stan) has picked Hertsjazz up off its knees and secured a home for it at Campus West, just a short walk from the station.
