My ears respond more to the female vocals of 60s/70s SA music than the ''''growly'''' men (I expect this is sacrilege) - are there any compilation albums where the women hold uninterrupted sway ? (Miriam Makeba obviously, but I especially like the female groups, including those MM herself was in.)

"Dark City Sisters and the Flying Jazz Queens" but it's out of print, so ridiculously expensive

I'd burn you a copy, but I don't have it myself despite having hunted for a reasonable priced one in the past.

Howard, please forgive me for being so lazy, but have you held forth on the merits of the second in the series of Next Stop . . . Soweto?

I have indeed, and should you continue to be too lazy to click on the link below, I’ll just say briefly that while I am also not Jamie, I concur with his view. It’s sufficiently different from Vol 1, so also be an essential purchase. However, my lack of a fully developed jazz ear means that Vol 3 has grabbed me less. And, Andy, I totally agree about you about the female vocals on all these tracks; one of the sexiest and simultaneously sweetest and holiest sounds in the world. But I quite like the growley men too – makes for a nice juxtaposition.
