Zee, a poster called Madame2 is splurging lots of PR-speak in various threads - the Hindi Zahra & Angelique Kidjo ones for example.

It's spam when it's so repetitive & disguises itself as something else. A single promotional comment about an artist is one thing, but these have been excessive.

i agree 6 posts on 1 gig is a bit excessive, maybe Zee should write a gentle protocol note. But mention of shows once or twice I think is acceptable (as someone who does it!) as with DJ nights, Chilli Fried etc, who also make good use of the site

I think it's pretty obviously PR so wouldn't attach the "masquerading" word to it. But it does seem a bit close to all this ghastly "social media" mania with its fake friends, etc.

Ultimately, I think it's the sort of thing that hoists itself on its own petard. Like now we all know that it's PR (and rather inept at that), we're not going to give it much credibility.

Honestly, though, it doesn't bother me that much and the line between promoting your shows (or your employer's shows), etc. and over promoting whatever seems to me to be very, very fine. I'd rather that communication was kept as open as possible rather than restricted in any way. By now, we should all know how to ignore what bothers us online — unless it's a conversation about an important thing like musical taste. Genuine spam is a different beast.

I thought a bit further about it and what concerns me is the danger of throwing the baby out with the bathwater (and the use of too many clichés).

Last year we had quite a few postings from Mr. Invisible System concerning his ethio-out-there project, Punt, and currently we've had a few from various directions about Yaaba Funk's Afrobeast — and, while the style of those postings is obviously different and preferable (to me at least), I'd hate to see some sort of quota system of how many posts on a given subject or project are permitted. And, if it just comes down to style, well, that's ultimately a bit subjective, isn't it?

I say just ignore the excessive zeal of Madame2. Or give her the very gentlest of direction like a tip to this topic. I'm sure she'll learn the ropes soon enough.

I appreciate the gentle protocol note from zee. Comments taken on board. Didn't mean to offend anyone or show 'excessive zeal'. As David Flower pointed out, I'm representing/promoting both artists and I thought the forum was a good place to advertise their shows. I'm not pretending to be a PR, I'm trying to make sure my artists get as much exposure as possible when they are in the country for a show and I also want to make sure their potential audience is aware of their London appearances.

I'll proceed with moderation in the future.
