Rail Band Track

Postby Jaybird » Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:40 pm

There was a Rail Band track that Charlie regularly featured in The World of Difference days...it had a long spidery west coast style guitar intro...sounding like a cross between the Rail Band and The Grateful Dead...my memory is that it was a fairly obscure tune that was then only available on one album...anyone know the name of the track I`m on about?

Not Mansa Richard but thanks...the track I`m looking for sounds quite different to any other Rail Band track I`m aware of...but it was one Charlie came back to several times over the years

Blimey thats a lot of stuff Richard...cheers....but when I click on each album I just get NOT FOUND..dunno if I`m not doing something...The Legendary Bands of Mali looks promising...my memory is that it was played from a compilation like that rather than an album dedicated exclusively to The Rail Band-and that it was an obscure track only available on one album...although it could have been re-issued since on something else. I suspect that Ian or Nigel might remember...as I mentioned in another thread I probably do have the track somewhere on one of the countless tapes I have of Charlies shows from those years but unfortunately mine aren`t in the neat pile that Ian has....lesson in there no doubt.

I'll give you a wild guess at "Duga", which appeared on the Musiques du Mali Banzoumana compilation from Sylla Ibrahima, sometime in the mid-late 1990s. It can now be more readily heard on the Stern's Belle Epoque 1 Soundiata release. I'm not confident of this guess, not everything seems to fit but the guitar approximates your description. There's more than one version of the song around with a shorter one on The Rough Guide to Mali & Guinea that doesn't sound like what you're looking for.

Failing that the Rail Band track from Mali Music — Legendary Bands of Mali, the Stern's vinyl compilation from 1988, is happily enough "Mali Cébalenw," also to be found on the Belle Epoque 1 Soundiata release — but I don't think the music fits what the description of what you're looking for.
