During 2010, the slot features recycled programmes, most first broadcast on the World Service, but some featuring live sessions first broadcast in World on 3 on BBC Radio 3

Question about recording from Burundi

Postby pstamler » Tue Mar 23, 2010 8:22 pm

Hi folks:

First, my condolences to all of Charlie's friends and colleagues at the BBC and around the world. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he enriched my life and the lives of millions.

I have a question about a recording Charlie played a few months ago. It was from Burundi, possibly recorded during the 1960s, and it was made up of field recordings, wonderful music. Do any of you know what the recording was, and whether it's available, especially as a download? I'm a DJ in St. Louis, USA, planning a program which will pay tribute to Charlie and his work, and I'd love to find that recording to play on the air. You can reply off-forum; my e-mail address is:

Thanks, all!

Peace,

Yes indeed -- thanks! Now I need to find a place to download it legally. Can anyone make suggestions?

Peace,

Couldn't tell you anything about the legality, but:

It's not a download. You'll have to record.

Supposedly Honest Jon's have the CD for sale for only £9.99, which is frankly a steal considering what it's fetching elsewhere:

One word of warning: I have found that Honest Jon's offer titles they can't actually supply. But there was no problem about refunds.

If this is the original recording, made in 1967, then no home should be without it.The first track, "The Whispering Song", terrified the life out of me the first time I heard it. Charlie recently played it alongside Tom Waits's "Troubles' Braids" which was obviously inspired by it.
Also on the original Burundi are the two young girls singing what sound like polyrhythmic nursery rhymes. Astonishing!

Hello Paul,

Will there be somewhere online where we can hear your programme ? Will it only be streamed live or can we hear it from an archive ?

Keep us informed. Thanks.

I'm very suprised that Ocora seemingly haven't kept this classic album in print. They certainly regularly rerelease other acclaimed golden oldies, eg the Jali Nyama Suso kora album etc

Thank you for the information. The program, "No Time to Tarry Here", airs on Sundays from 2-4 pm North American Central Daylight time, which is 1900-2100 GMT. It's described as "Traditional music and related stuff"; the "related stuff" lets me do just about anything. Normally I focus on music from North America and the UK, but this week, in tribute to Charlie Gillett, I'll include music from a lot more countries, of course without pretending to Charlie's expertise! The program is streamed at www.kdhx.org and is archived for two weeks after broadcast; to find the archive, go to the "Radio" tab at the upper left of the website, then click "Programs", then scroll down to Sunday and click on "No Time to Tarry Here". There should be two weeks of archive there, along with playlists. World Music fans would also, I think, enjoy "Music from the Hills", which airs immediately after (from 2100-2300 GMT). The host, John Uhlemann, focuses mainly on music from Eastern Europe, but occasionally wanders into Scandinavia, North Africa and the Middle East.

Peace,
Paul J. Stamler (broadcasting as "Pablo Meshugi")

The Ocora album is still available, randomly packaged with music from Sierra Leone and Madagascar in a 3-CD box set called "Cordes d'Afrique" or "Strings of Africa"

Hi folks:

The program I did this afternoon in tribute to Charlie Gillett is now archived and can be streamed for the next two weeks. Go here:

http://tinyurl.com/notimetotarry

and click on the "Stream" button for March 28th 2010. Thanks for the help, folks -- shall definitely order the "Strings of Africa" set.

Peace,
Paul
