Oh... That's really awful. I'm so sorry. He was such a lovely guy. And such a real music lover.

Poor Buffy.

I had such a love in my heart for Charlie. I don't know what type you'd call it. I actually had dreams of meeting him, & now I never will. It's so heartbraking.

I don't know what to say - my deepest thoughts and condolences go out to Buffy and the children and grandchildren as well as all those people most affected by this loss - Zee, Alan, Nikki, Philip, Norman...you can measure the man by the number of people who you know are really feeling this shock. Deepest sympathies to all. I'm numb.

Still can't focus on this awful news.

There's a Richard Williams obituary already on the Guardian site:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/ ... t-obituary

and I was just re-reading the interview we did in 2001, which might interest some of you who didn't know so much about Charlie's earlier pre-worldmusic years. He did so much, but still had so much more to offer. http://www.frootsmag.com/content/featur ... e-gillett/

Edit: sorry, I see Norman had already posted the Guardian link. Not reading things too well.

This is dreadfully sad news. I will never forget the first time I heard him on the World Service early one morning when I turned on the radio to hear music I'd never heard before and that changed my listening habits for ever.

My heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and to his friends here on this forum.

I look forward to seeing him in the resurrection.

With deep sadness

This news bring tears to my eyes and after reading this thread I can't stop but feel for those who actually knew Charlie. It's very tragic to lose someone who inspired so many and for someone who never met him to feel this sad can only feel for those who lost a friend, father, hero or whatever Charlie was to them. Charlie indirectly affected my life for the better and I know there is a couple who met because of Charlie's forum who never would have met otherwise. My sentiments go to all who feel for this man. May your memories of Charlie be more golden than any physical treasure.

Shell shocked like everyone else. Charlie was a joy to meet, a wonderful inspirational feller, and ...well, he just meant so much to me over many many years.

I'm devastated. Charlie's been part of my life since I first read Sound of the City 40 years ago. It was such a pleasure to spend of couple of hours with him here in Seoul last year, shopping for DVDs, drinking tea, and talking about his enthusiasm for Korean music.

This sucks.

I'm going to drink some whisky and listen to some of the records Charlie Gillett introduced me to.

I'm very sad. Although I never met him in person for almost 40 years he's talked to me over the radio and inspired me continually to investigate new recordings.
The first show I remember listenening to he announced that someone had written to tell him he was playing all the wrong records and Charlie asked him on the show the following week for what we'd now call ping pong. My condolences to his family.

Can't add anything to what's been said so eloquently already, A man who enriched so much for so many.
