No doubt the BNP have a few nasty things to say about all those awful immigrant and migrating birds from Africa and the Arctic who come over to Britain and freeload off the British environment, eating all the native insects and berries. Seems like it could be ripe for a bit of satirical provocation.

Now British anglers kill more swans every year through disguarded tackle than any immigrants do.

He appears very concerned about our precious 'ecosystems' but he doesn't seem concerned about British gamekeepers poisoning raptors and mustelids in their hundreds, British egg-thieves stealing rare birds eggs up and down the country, British industrialists polluting hundreds of miles of British rivers annually, British pigeon-fanciers killing Peregrines so they don't predate their precious racers etc.

He quoted the Daily Mail story about eastern europeans decimating the swan population on the River Lee - this was at best er "unsubstantiated". Although the bizarre image of Poles fishing for swans with toilet seats (you toss them over their heads and it stops their wings moving apparently) is one that has stayed with me.

The Lee has been used as an industrial dump for hundreds of years - when it gets dredged the mud has to be treated as low-level toxic waste. There's been a lot of dredging lately what with the Olympics and everything. We were really hoping they'd do some of the events on The Lee - I would have enjoyed sitting in The Anchor and Hope watching the cream of the worlds rowing talent dodging shopping trolleys as the drizzle blasted in across the marshes.
