Gil Scott-Heron "I'm New Here"

You can listen to the whole of his new album "I'm New Here" here. Powerful blues poetry around the themes of family, death and redemption.

Not overly impressed with the album. "Me and the Devil" is great but nothing else comes close. It's a very sad listen overall, Heron's voice is ravaged and its hard to see who will really go for it. His traditional audience will probably not like the electronics and the "youth" won't get it. Still, a very interesting record though, been playing it regularly these last weeks but it cannot compare with his greatest output from the 70s.

I have received my copy this week. It is different from his 70s output (of which I am a huge fan), but has its own strengths and I would strongly recommend to all and sundry.

Gil Scott-Heron is definitely a survivor whatever else he may be. He is probably the artist responsible for the most ravaged, untogether show I've ever seen. Quite awe-inspiringly unhinged due to drink. And here it is twenty years or so later and he's still producing. Amazing!

I got my copy through eMusic, and I like it quite a bit. "Me And The Devil" and "I'll Take Care Of You" are the standout tracks, but I'd say that the rest of it is either good enough or interesting enough to justify the price.

I've since listened to the whole thing on the Guardian stream. Not sure I could listen to it again. Although I downloaded one token track, "Me And The Devil." The lyrics are grim (understandable) and the music is a bit on the dull side imho. Well, who said music always has to be entertaining? I suppose as a personal statement it has some value.
