Al's suggestion has put me in mind of "The Jarrow Song" by Alan Price.

Walkin'

Postby Adam Blake » Sun Feb 12, 2006 2:01 pm

Has anyone mentioned "Walkin'" by Miles Davis? Of course, this is an instrumental but it was a staple of Miles's set for many years. The original 1954 version is a classic workout for the pedal extremities. 13 minutes of walking down a long street in New York on a beautiful sunny morning. The most perfectly paced musical stroll I can think of. Hey!

Walking songs

In response to Charlie's query about whether The Walker Brothers did a 'walking' song, there was of course 'Walking In The Rain'.

There's a lovely song by James Taylor called "The Walking Man". I don't think anyone else has mentioned this one.

"Walk" Songs

I can't believe I just spent 10 minutes of my time scrolling through this topic just to see if anyone had mentioned Mink Deville's great CADILLAC WALK......I didn't see it, but that's not to say it's not there. I don't have it in me to check through again.

already listed earlier - we need a hero to keep a tab on these songs to avoid such repetitions...
:-P
(Sorry Charlie, couldn't resist it - anyway, I can't talk: I duplicated your mentions of Walking The Blues and Walking On Sunshine)

The words to Walking My Baby Back Home go something like:

"Gee it’s great after being out late
Walking my baby back home
Arm in arm over meadow and farm
Walking my baby back home
…
We stop for a while and she gives me a smile
And snuggles her head on my chest
We're starting to pet and that’s when I get
Her talcum all over my vest"

Nikki Atkinson wrote:I can't think whether it's "Walk in the Dark" or "..in the Night", can someone put me straight?

I think it's "Night" - and well done for getting a "walk" song by a "Walker"!

Here are a few more:

Vashti Bunyan I'd Like To Walk Around In Your Mind
Bobby Paris I Walked Away
The Blue Nile A Walk Across The Rooftops
The Clara Ward Singers I'm Gonna Walk and Talk With Jesus
Archie Bell And The Drells Soul City Walk
The Caravans Walk Around Heaven All Day

Thanks to David (Atkinson) for putting me straight about Jnr Walker & the Allstars "Walk in the Night" and the kind comments.

As I was reading through the suggestions I thought of "Walk Between The Raindrops" as recorded by Donald Fagen from the "Nightfly" album. I don't think this one has appeared.[/i]

And Phil Ochs sang I Ain't Marching Any More, though he was referring to the tramp of military boots rather than protestors.
Also, The Manchester Rambler by Ewan MacColl (see topic - Wanderlust: A History of Walking, by Rebecca Solnit in Books)

How could I forget?! I mentioned Rory McLeod in an earlier post, but forgot about his album Footsteps & Heartbeats. It doesn't include a song of that title, but much of his music is about the places he's visited or life on the road in one form or another. A review quoted on Rory's website backs me up: "Restless footsteps and the pulsing heartbeat of the music takes the listener on journeys through the streets of Britain, the dusty plains of the East and the ramble tamble of the South Americas. There are some excellent melodies at play; it's Mcleod who provides the beating heart". (Broadbeat - Scotland)
Nice sleeve too:-)

"Walking In Rhythm" as recorded by the Blackbyrds, a group often associated with trumpeter Donald Byrd.

Walking Songs

Postby Michael Hingston » Wed Feb 15, 2006 1:29 pm

The Walker Brothers (and other artists with a walking reference in their name) have recorded songs about walking:

The Walker Brothers recorded "Walking In The Rain" and conversely "Walkin' in the Sun".

Jr Walker and The All-Stars recorded "Walk In The Night"

Also: The Jordanaires (including Raymond C Walker) "You'll Never Walk Alone" & T-Bone Walker "Strollin' With Bones"
