The sad passing of Willie Mitchell reminds me of a track by the Hodges Brothers that I have, but I've never been able to find the album it came from. The track is called "Best In Town" and I have it on a compilation that came with the Oxford American Magazine Southern music issue of 2000 (I think). If anyone knows where I can get hold of the album that featured this track originally, I'd be very grateful.
Rob - I've searched every hill and digital dale known to this vinyl snooper and come up with nary a whiff. I hate failed musical quests, so have resorted to asking the cd compilers at OA. I'll let you know if I get a response.
Thanks for that Charlie. I suppose that, given a little more grey matter, I could have contacted the OA people myself. Let me know what they say if/when they get back to you.
I have the latest OA music issue (they do one per year) on order - the music is always interesting, and the writing is usually of a pretty high standard too.
I couldn't find anything either; - the only album by the Hodges Brothers that I could find any reference to was a CD titled "Perfect Gentlemen", released by Velvet Recordings of America in 1994, and the only info on that I could find was that it featured Percy (brother of Spencer) Wiggins singing lead on four tracks. Perhaps it was taken from that album, or it may be an exclusive to the sampler?
The curious can hear the track on this archived WFMU broadcast -
