Can someone put me out of my misery and remind me of the name of the chap who used to do the cartoons on the Melody Maker jazz pages - Mal someone-or-other?
They were usually clever and often quite witty - I recall one accompanying a review of an Evan Parker - Paul Lytton duo free jazz/noise group LP with Parker playing a drainpipe. I used to cut them out and keep them for a while but of course they've long disappeared.
In an idle moment the other day I felt like doing a search to see if there were any on the net - but couldn't remember the guy's name. He's dead now I think, the last thing I remember reading about him was his obituary, some years ago.
Mal also did work for International Times and I think the event at the 100 was some kind of fund raiser for them. Another attendee was a mutual friend of Charlie and I, Wynford Hicks. Wynford was having an intense conversation with the guy next to Mal Dean and later I jokingly asked Wynford who he had been giving ear ache to he replied,“Ralph Steadmanâ€
