I have more or less the opposite experience in that Spotify continues to play even after I have shut it down, quite disconcerting

Charlie, do you ... stop what you are playing before you close it down? or do you just close the programme down? That has happened to me a few times when i forget to stop the music playing by 'hitting' the pause/play button.

Help!

Even though I got it working for a while, today I went back to Spotify, where I remembered my username and password.

I can't find the link on the homepage that leads to place where I can continue to compile playlists.

Do you mean this information on the help page that tells how to do collaborative playlists?
http://tinyurl.com/63y27k

You don't mean the Spotify window that you search for all the tracks in and drag the ones you want into your playlist to create them do you? The little window that comes up on the computer screen when opening Spotify?

Or do you have a different account than the free one that allows you to do radio, etc?

I am using the free version.

What I am trying to reach is the second section referred to above.

If I go to the link you provided, and go back to the front page, it shows the three available version, free, one day and subscription. I choose free, and it then offers three activities, one of which is share, but that is not actually a live link and that's where I get stuck,

I'm a Mac user and on a Mac, Spotify is an application with an Icon (a green circle thing) used to access the application/program. The Icon is kept on the desktop and clicked on to get into the program. If the Icon is lost, disappears from the desktop, one would go into the 'applications folder' (on the hardrive for example) and drag the Icon back onto the desktop to open the program. Don't you have a PC though, Charlie?

The link I provided is just a page on the website/blog describing how to 'collaborate' with playlists. Anyone can access that page. What you need is to be able to open the application/program so you can log in and therby get into Spotify proper and it sounds like you've lost that 'Icon to click on" or window or however it is done on a PC.

I have had to re-download the programme another couple of times in the last day (and remove the old one from Applications, because it wouldn't open). I have just found a part of the screen, on initial download, that asks if I want to stay logged in. I never noticed this before, it seemed to be in a darkened corner. I've now done this, and will see how it goes after a lay off. Will report back.

I've listened to Dayna's latest rave, Pit Bull - it seems to be an advert on the start page.

That would explain things, it hadn't occurred to me that there was a fault in the presentation. Certainly there are what look like icons whcih aren't alive, and so this may be the solution. I will also report back, hoping that I am not going to have to recompile all those playlists it took so long to do the first time.

jackdaw version wrote:So far, the one to beat for me is eMusic. $20 a month, 90 tracks to download, decent selection although far from everything.

I take this back. The recent price increase of 82% is not what I had in mind when I said those nice things.

That's terrible. Seems to be happening with lots of things over here, though usually it's been a gradual (sneaky) climb.

I read about the eMusic price hike on a US website last week. Apparently, they've done a deal with Sony to offer the Columbia back catalogue and the eMusic head guy figured it was a good opportunity to introduce a price hike, figuring that people wouldn't mind paying more for access to the Columbia stuff. Well, it's a theory. I haven't seen anything in the British press about it, and I've had no notification from them to tell me that there's a price hike on the way, but I'm in no doubt that it will hit us over here sooner or later. At which point I shall give serious thought to cancelling my subscription.

I am impressed and it seems to have a very wide choice. Some points that have come to mind are:

1.The need for a very big record/cd collection is dead

2.Down loading files legally or illegally is dead

3.Having the wide world of music at your finger tips is alive

4. Being able to check out stuff before I buy for example the new comp
of producer George Phang is up on Spotify. Essential for the like of us music addicts.

Some more obscure labels like Dust to Digital not there yet? Will see what happens in the future. Turned my world of music listing and future purchase upside down.

Everything is fine & dandy. I no longer have to keep re-loading as I'm now permanently logged in.

Spotify's playlist seems to be getting longer each time I look. A whole page of versions of "Long Black Veil", but two was enough for that one. Spotify exposes an odd aspect of behaviour: you develop a need to hear some old or half remembered song, and that desire is then instantly satisfied, to the point of sickness through over-eating.

Ritchie's and Leon's playlists are great - highly recommended, thanks boys. Is this the new way of becoming an internet DJ? Working up the playlist seems to be getting easier, but finding an interested audience may be as hard as ever.

Well I've only just got around to registering - and everything Leon says is true. This is the best thing to hit music since they invented the technology that meant you didn't have to keep winding up the gramophone !

Welcome to the club of which I am a lapsed member, Nigel.

I became discouraged by how much is still missing - of the tracks on my forthcomiing Honky Tonk compilation, less than half were available when I last looked.
