Anyone into 'The Wire', and Lee Child fans, check out 'Lush Life' by Richard Price, who wrote some episodes for 'The Wire'.
Brilliant Lower East Side crime writing, evokes the neighbourhood of the old Jewish delicatessens (send a salami to your boy in the army) and the new gentrification going on there alongside the project housing, and how they interact. Very clever the way the plot is revealed , and the central character Eric is a masterpiece of modern living.
It should be put in paperback by now, you wont be able to put it down.

Thank you Maggie. A friend told me about this just the other day, but it had gone out of my head until your note reminded me. I'll be getting hold of a copy pdq.

Unfortunately, having now checked, it appears that the paperback is not available in the UK until August - and Amazon UK do not currently have the hardback available.

Rob, I can lend u a copy of the hardback. I was gifted it by a friend who knew i was a Wire fan. I had a problem with it - found it wildly overlong and overwritten. Same problem I had with Price's Clockers. I loved his first book The Wanderers but his move to epic format does not sit well with me. Unlike Maggie I struggled my way through it but I always find big novels hard work so perhaps the failings are more mine than the author's.

That's a very kind offer Garth, which I'll take you up on, so thanks.

Incidentally, just last night I started on Junot Diaz' "Oscar Wao". Initial impressions suggest that all of the praise that it received last year is well deserved.
