Can you produce your programme in a podcast?

During 2010, the slot features recycled programmes, most first broadcast on the World Service, but some featuring live sessions first broadcast in World on 3 on BBC Radio 3

Can you produce your programme in a podcast?

Postby Charlie » Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:25 am

email from Dr Howard Scott, Guangzhou, China

Charlie - can you produce your programme in a podcast? I would love to be able to listen to it on a Chinese bus or train.
Cheers
Howard

Similar questions are asked virtually every week, so it's about time I posted an explanation here.

The BBC has not yet been able to make an agreement with the owners of rights in recordings and songs to allow them to reproduce entire programmes as downloads. The rights owners feel that they should be compensated for this use of their music, but as the BBC would not be charging for the podcast, there is no 'income stream' to share with the owners. Impasse, for the time being.

I used to be able to download Charlie Gillett's show -- wonderful to listen to in the car when I CAN -- otherwise rare times. This seems to have changed. Is is possible?

CG reply

I don't think anything has changed recently, apart from the iPlayer becoming the medium for listening, but perhaps others know better

I'm sure there are various technologies to do this. A while ago, I installed "Freecorder" which can record anything you play over your computer speakers. It's a manual process, in that you have to start the recording, (pause it, if that's what you want), and then stop it manually. I tried it out on Charlie's Manu Chao show. Info here: http://applian.com/freecorder3/support/user_guide.php

Note from CG: I have not posted every query on this topic, but here's the latest, from:

1. Ron Geff, The netherlands

dear madam/sir,

why isn't Charlie Gillett's World of Music available as a podcast?

All the while the BBC fails to sort this, there's a really simple solution. For Macs there's a piece of easily findable, downloadable and useable software called Audio Hijack Pro. I know there are PC equivalents - there's one mentioned a few postings above. You just hit "record" as you listen to the iPlayer and you end up with a file you can use just like a Podcast - put it in your iPod or burn it to CD for the car or wherever. The only difference in convenience is that you have to grab it in in real time rather than get a quick download of a file to play later - otherwise, it's the same, no great mysteries involved or tech knowledge needed.

Audacity (a freeware application) can do this quite easily and you have the option of saving it to various file formats e.g. wav or mp3.

Podcast ?

Postby rwebbmn » Fri Sep 18, 2009 2:08 pm

I have been listening since 2007. I copy each weeks show with a program called replay radio - thus producing my own podcast of the show. It is wonderful to take these along with me on my ipod and other mp3 players. I have backup up the mp3 files and thus have an archive of these shows running over 2 years.

hallo everyone,
hallo rwebbmn,

as a latecomer to charlie gillett's world of music show I'd be very appreciative of any mp3 or whatever format recording you may still have of him, regardless of quality.
I read here for example that rwebbmn has copies of the show since 2007.
If anyone has such recordings please let me know.
