Lost and Found in 2005 - Lifetime subscription to Songlines

Postby Charlie » Sat Nov 19, 2005 4:13 pm

Post your candidates for "Lost and Found in 2005" - nominating songs by a music figure who died this year (*) and your discovery of the year (whether new or old) - just one nomination in each category.

All your names will be put in a hat, and one of you will win a lifetime subscription to Songlines Magazine [ http://www.songlines.co.uk/ ]

This is going to sound terrible, but I am being brutally honest here - I went through the list of deceased musicians and I can't get terribly worked up about the death of any of them. Obviously Ibrahim, and Marcia was a little upset about Luther (taken before his time, certainly) but otherwise...

So there goes my chances for a lifetime subscription to Songlines!

Last year I was actually given a years subscription to the magazine by my brother in law Steve, who is also into world music. As I started having reviews in the magazine at the beginning of the year - for which one gets sent a free copy - I ended up with two copies of each issue, one which I therefore forwarded to him. I can't think of a better example of someone benefiting from a gift they gave someone else. My subscription has now ended, as has my bothering to pester the mag to let me review albums, so I'm now back to square one.

This was a typical experience for the man we call Lucky Steve, whose house is full of bootie given to him or bought at silly prices at car boot sales. For example, I might come back with a dodgy field recording CD of African drummers, he'll come back with a £100 tripod for 50p which perfectly fits his camera.

Following his brain operation earlier this year I took him on a short walk from his house so he could get a little exercise. As we returned the Asian woman who lives next door beckoned us over, apparently to examine the contents of her wheely bin. It was full of plastic bags containing commercial video tapes of old 'Morse' and 'Blake's 7' episodes which she wondered if Steve would like. With three months off work and a passion for sci fi and detective shows, of course Steve wanted them. I couldn't believe the guy only had to walk a hundred yards from his front door to have good luck happen to him.

But I digress - found this year?

Well, Darko of course. Although I first heard him towards the end of last year, it's been this year that his album has provided constant pleasure and without a doubt, the most visits to the CD player.

PS

Though do put Marcia in the hat - I'm sure she would lend me her copy of Songlines if she won!

Lost & Found '05

Postby Roger Bradley » Sun Nov 20, 2005 1:25 pm

LOST

Ronnie Barker: Although I probably won't miss his singing, this great entertainer was for me the most significant loss in 2005. I'm nominating him because his passing affected me more deeply than anyone (important though they may have been) on the website's obituary list.
We could remember him by playing the short cajun track 'Saturday Night Special' by Lesa Cormier & The Sundown Playboys (from the '25 Years of Ace' CD). I think Ronnie would have liked it.

FOUND

Boubacar Traoré: This Malian singer/guitarist has been around a long time but somehow he just hadn't registered with me before his 'Kongo Magni' album came out earlier this year. It has definitely become one of my albums of the year, getting better with each hearing.
I've been surprised that Charlie hasn't yet played the stand-out track, 'Kanou'. With it's catchy accordian hook, it's one of those "world" songs that in a just land would be a massive hit single. (The original CD pressing, by the way, has a bit more bite than that on the excellent 'Putumayo Presents Mali'.)

Lost: Junior Delgado - never one of reggae's superstars but consistently interesting and challenging throughout his career.

Found: has to be Mahmoud Ahmed - certainly not a new performer (the opposite!). but new to me. Sue and I were lying in bed listening to Charlie's show on listen again one Sunday morning when we had one of those jaw dropping "what on earth was that" moments as Charlie played a Mahmoud Ahmed track from on the Ethiopiques collections, by way of highlghting that Mahomoud would be playing at Womad.

We made up our minds there and then to go to Reading for the day, and were not disappointed, with Mahmoud's celebratory storming performance being the highlight of the day for me, and one of the best things I've seen on a stage for a good while.

I placed a few of the obits. throughout the year, and a couple of them I'd heard of from friends of mine who'd known the people in question. Their lives had meant a lot to them and they were affected, if not terribly worked up. So, brutal honesty from one person becomes crass insensitivity to another.

Yes well - we'd live in fear of mentioning anything in a slightly insensitive way - 9/11 or whatever - if we had to consider the feelings of every single person on the planet each time. I just wanted to make the point that perhaps a list of the Battle of the Somme victims would have moved me more.

But apologies anyway.

Lost: Tyrone Davis - blessed with a voice of grit & grace. When the material was right (such as the timeless 'Can I Change My Mind') very few could match him.

Found: Yasmin Levy / Ska Cubano - both been around for a while, but this year they did things to make me sit up & take notice.
+ Otis Taylor - yes, I know Papa Joe Cushley's been championing him since the early 17th Century, but I've only just discovered him. His music grows with each listen.

... er ... sorry ... seem to have got carried away & nominated 3 'founds'

Found would be Pedro Luis Ferrer especially his contribution to the 'Before Night Falls' (2001) soundtrack which I have already praised elsewhere in this forum & has had a right good playing round our place in the last few months.

Lost. Another vote for R.L.Burnside. Norman & Howards exchange earlier in this section did actually make me feel uncomfortable about the idea of ranking one recently deceased person over another. Perhaps that's me being a tad oversensitive. Anyone else any thoughts?

We clearly have a bit of a problem here. Good luck to you all with striking the right balance between being over sensitive, and not sensitive enough!

Lost & Found

Postby paul Mc » Mon Nov 21, 2005 9:25 pm

Lost in the year the fine Blues/RnB Singer Clarence Gatemouth Brown
who died on 10.09.05 following his evacuation from his home in Sidell
just before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I will remember him primarily for Okie Dokie Stomp among many great sides

Found in the year( apart from several artists which other people have put forward) is a single Soul track by Johnny Soul called "I almost called your name" which I found on a cheap (£6.99)3CD set on Prism compiled by Clive Richardson entitled Southern Soul..just goes to show there is always something you haven't heard out there...

Also check out the recent Rhino Set of Ray Charles Atantic Recordings
7CD's in a pretty Box just right for Xmas ...under £60 from Amazon !
