Ian Dury film confirmed

Postby Neil Foxlee » Tue Feb 10, 2009 1:36 pm

"It has just been officially confirmed that an unconventional film biopic about the iconic musician Ian Dury entitled ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’, will star Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) in the title role. Produced by Damian Jones (Kidulthood, Adulthood), the film will be released in 2010. Jankel has been appointed as musical supervisor, while The Blockheads have already recorded tracks for the film soundtrack."

I understand that the story is set in the period after Ian had ended Kilburn & the High Roads, and before he had completed New Boots & Panties. It's intended to be a snapshot of a moment in his life, rather than a comprehensive biopic. If all goes to plan, the film will include at least two songs from the Kilburns' set.

It's been remarkable that this film is being planned at the same time as the unrelated stage play The Life and Rhymes of Ian Dury has been staged. And coincidentally, Will Birch has almost completed his biography, not the first but hopefully the most authoritative and definitive.

It looks as if Ian is turning out to be one of those people who stands higher in history's rankings than he managed to climb during his own lifetime.
