George Clinton's music has some of the most interesting lyrics I've heard.

Starchild has one;
Just put some glide in your stride
Dip in your hip

P-Funk( Wants To Get Funked Up);
Can you imagine Dooble in your Funk.

"We smoked the last one an hour ago...."

The line that does come back constantly (and from the same writer) is "Prior to this lifetime / I surely was a tailor / look at me...." Most recently, about two hours ago, as I sat unstitching some double piping that had gone wrong and needed re-sewing.

My uncle Alf said that when his grandad came off the boat the immigration men asked his name and profession. They couldn't spell his name so they just put "tailor" for both.

Let's hear it for Paul Simon. I always kinda liked him. I was brought up on S&G but (like so many others) looked down my nose at them after the Dylan bomb dropped when I was about 16. Now I don't care what anybody thinks about what music I like or don't like, I can enjoy a good dose of sensitive middle class Jewish New York pathos with the best of them. (I still can't hack it with Artie, though. One of my favourite recording engineer stories is the one that tells of how he took something like 176 takes to nail the vocal on "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Now THAT'S torture...)

So would that have been Schneider der shnayder?

The best "when he got off the onion boat story" is about the guy who's asked what his name is in English. He replies in Yiddish, "Ich vergessen," ("I forget"). So the officials label him Ike Ferguson.

My line above is from S&G's wonderful and rarely played "Faking It", which features a spoken cameo from Beverley Kutner.

time it was oh what a time it was it was. I have a photograph. Prison your memories, there all that's left you. - S&G

Thanks for the memory
Of candlelight and wine,
castles on the Rhine,
The Parthenon, and moments on
the Hudson River Line
How lovely it was! (etc)

----------------------------

The powers that be
That force us to live like we do
Bring me to my knees
When I see what they've done to you
But Ill die as I stand here today
Knowing that deep in my heart
They'll fall to ruin one day
For making us part

I found a picture of you,
Those were the happiest days of my life
------------------------------------------------

Like fat guys driving round in jeeps through the city
Wearing big diamond rings and silk suits
Past corrugated tin shacks full up with kids
Oh man I dont mean a hampstead nursery
When you own a big chunk of the bloody third world
The babies just come with the scenery....

Dont harass me, cant you tell
Im going home, Im tired as hell
Im not the cat I used to be
I got a kid, Im thirty-three

It's so nice thinking that someone with her talent came from my area.
