Hello, Charlie! Your programme is fantastic. It is the nice World Music programme that inspired me to produce my own show on a local radio station two years ago. U r my inspiration! A couple of years ago I heard a song from Congo and I fell in love with it . Unfortunately I didn't understand when you mentioned its name, but now I know it's from Franco Luambo because I eventually found it!!! Could you please play it again? Its name is Infidelite Mado. following-up a previous email, from Robert Patterson:

I'm the Mate on the British research ship James Clark Ross, and the World Service is a blessing (even if much of it wasn't what it was). We can even pick you up in Antarctica sometimes.

I'm in my early fifties now, but I suppose you could listen to music from around the world for a hundred years and just scratch the surface.
Being in the Merchant Navy you sail past a lot of exotic places and pick up some wonderful fragments drifting through the airwaves. But you could probably listen to music from around the world for a hundred years and just scratch the surface.

I think my first purchase was Marta Sebestyen's Muzsikas in 1987 or thereabouts - vinyl of course, and I've still got it. (To tell the truth I think I bought it because I quite fancied her photo on the cover.) Money well spent.

I don't buy that many albums, but I did go a bit over the top once and bought a whole pile of Uruguayan music when I was in Montevideo. Alfredo Zitarossa made a great impression on me at the time. Interesting character.

But my favourite music is usually some female wailing about her man - who's either away from home, or fallen victim to some misadventure or other. Perhaps I've been at sea too long. The likes of fado, and songs of love and longing for home and landscape, strike a chord with me.

I hesitate to recommend anything to someone knowledgeable as you, and I know Julie Fowlis is all the rage at the moment, but I wonder if you've heard Ishbel MacAskill singing Soraidh Leis An Ait. It's on an album called Gaelic Women. Or Rachel Walker's version of Alasdair A Gleanna Garadh? Maybe it's not your cup of tea.

I'll get out of your hair now - but keep up the good work Charlie. It is very much appreciated.

Dear CG. Where I live we only get you on radio from 9pm to 9am and as am now grey haired I have the radio on all night. You come I do't know when, but if I'm sleeping I will often wake up cos your music choice just speaks to my soul. I seem to particularlyfor the music associated with the desert. I would just love to go that fest in Timbuktu, but it is exorbitantly expensive to get there from here.

First started listening when I heard Salif Keita in the early hours some months ago when I couldn,t sleep and had to rush out and buy a CD of his. I recall it from memory and, to me, sounds perfect for a spin on World of Music. I am lucky in that I can travel widely in SE and E Asia.

I hear lots of exciting music from these areas but World of Music rarely visits, and it seems to me that this music deserves a wider audience.

The music is attractive and is as accessible to listeners as any other world music.

Charlie, please give it a go and incorporate some more into the programme.

My access to music from Asia is limited, and I tend to favour what strikes me hardest and what seems to 'fit' with everything else.

But there is no excuse for missing out more than half the world.

Really a simple billet-doux, as it comes from the heart,to you regarding what I feel is a distinct lack of anything from the rich seam of Czech folk music in your excellent show although you do on occasion slip something in from Slovakia it would be great to also have some thing from Moravia or the south east of the country.

Yaravi, Marinera, Wayno, Lando, Sikury, Walts peruano, to list just a few types. Instruments of peruvian origen such as: cajon, charango, quijada, quena.

Why do you call your programme the world of music ? You very rarely have any other music than African or middle eastern. Don't you know about the rest of the world ?
