by email from Ian Anderson:

"The Panic Is On" by Hazekiah Jenkins (1931). Scarily appropriate.

Not sure if it's easily available - it was on Various Artists 'Songsters and Saints: Vocal Traditions on Race Records Vol 1' Matchbox Bluesmaster Series MSEX 2001/2002 compiled by Paul Oliver

'The Panic Is On' is available from a Document compilation 'Blues Obscurities 1923 - 1931'

http://www.zavvi.co.uk/music-Blues-10+t ... 10.1/p.jsf

I've not heard the track, but it does look to be a cheery number:

the rich will live
and the poor will die
dog-gone
the panic is on

Poor Man's Heaven

Postby Rob Hall » Thu Oct 09, 2008 10:20 am

Some years ago RCA issued a really good series of compilations under the general title "When The Sun Goes Down/The Secret History of Rock and Roll". One of them was songs from the depression era called "Poor Man's Heaven: Blues & Tales of the Great Depression". The track listing is:

1. Eddie Cantor's Tips On The Stock Market - Eddie Cantor
2. A Tale Of The Ticker - Frank Crumit
3. Brother, Can You Spare A Dime? - Leo Reisman
4. Remember My Forgotten Man - George Hall
5. It Must Be Swell - Alex Bartha
6. Raising The Rent - Roy Bargy
7. Sittin' On A Rubbish Can - Julia Gerity
8. Ten Cents A Dance - High Hatters
9. Poor Man's Heaven - Carson Robison
10. The Rich Man And The Poor Man - Bob Miller
11. Hallelujah, I'm A Bum - Harry 'Mac' Mcclintock
12. All In Down And Out Blues - Uncle Dave Macon
13. Taxes On The Farmer Feeds Them All - Fiddlin' John Carson
14. How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live? - Blind Alfred Reed
15. The Farm Relief Song - Vernon Dalhart
16. Dusty Old Dust (So Long Its Been Good To Know Yuh) - Woody Guthrie
17. 35 Depression - Daddy Stovepipe
18. California Desert Blues - Lane Hardin
19. It's Hard Time - Joe Stone
20. President Roosevelt Is Everybody's Friend - Rev. J. M. Gates
21. CWA Blues - Joe Pullum
22. Jimmy Shut His Store Doors - Cedar Creek Sheik
23. Welfare Store Blues - Sonny Boy Williamson
24. Poor But Ambitious - Wilmoth Houdini

The Eddie Cantor track is a comedy routine: "... My uncle, he died in September. Poor fellow had diabetes at 45; that's nothing - I had Chrysler at 110..."

"Hallelujah, I'm A Bum" is great song, I should have mentioned it sooner in this thread.

Thanks Ron, but now it's getting embarrassing. I have this wonderful album, with notes scribbled on the back to prove I did listen to it at the time.

But I'd forgotten it has this great Calypso, which I discovered (for the first time, so I thought) on a more recent compilation, Stranded in the USA: Early Songs of Emigration (Trikont) and included on the forthcoming programme of songs to do with New York, to tie in with the World Service coverage of the US election.

I've incorporated the entire track-listing into our master list, which is getting ever more remarkable as your suggestions flow in.

I don't think anyone's yet mentioned the classic "Gimme Some Money" by legendary 60s beat group The Thamesmen.

Sidetracking somewhat, "The Panic’s On" was quite a popular song around 1926-7 and from memory Paul Oliver in his 1984 book "Songsters & Saints" discusses several Old Timey, Blues and Gospel renditions. Should any be interested I'll list 'em...

I think Paul included the Jenkins on one of the two double LPs which accompanied the book.

Noticing that Charlie played that great Explainer track on his show, I was prompted to dig out my copy of that WOMAD album.

And there, on the other side of Lorraine, is:

Orchestre Jazira : Money

Not sure now whether to put this in this thread, the Listening Spot Check or British Bands/African Style!

another good one

Trickle Down - Ani de Franco

Week 45's programme on the World Service is shamelessly pillaged from this thread.
