Someone else mentioned a person that collected music all his life, till he found all there was to that, & started on stamps.
What are other things people here find interesting to collect besides music?
My Grandma has been very good at just collecting stuff. Her whole house & basement can look like a museum at times, with dresses, shoes from the 40s & other things. Unfortunately, my Mom & my uncle calls it junk & he's been cleaning it out, since Grandma's dementia is getting worse now. But that stuff is interesting to me. It's historical.

I used to collect stamps for awhile, & had some interesting ones, but got bored with that, eventually. I've got a small collection of the Breyer plastic horse models, that are so detailed, they look very close to the real horses that I've always loved... but obviously not what I really want. ;-(

I collect pictures of people who look a bit like my husband. He wears very distinctive round horn-rimmed spex which he thought were fairly uncommon, given that most people wear the thin letterbox types.

However, it's been quite an "eye-opener" to find out that they're not so obscure after all and now our fridge is covered with cuttings of the ophthalmically challenged, such as the great Angus Deayton and Ernest Bevin.

My personal favourite is that of Arthur Askey, in the role of Charley's Aunt.

I think I need to get out more often.

In all my days I never thought I'd hear of anyone having a picture of Ernest Bevin as a pin up. I remember lots of family members and friends having those roundy old glasses, the style of the times. Such wearers who talked and argued a lot were seen as "intellectuals", or at least brainy.

And back to Dayna's subject, I collect - not avidly now - Gollancz Left Book Club editions. The best one is Orwell's "Road To Wigan Pier". The more interesting titles (ie the ones I'm actually interested in reading) have vanished, or are silly priced. I picked up a copy of a Clifford Odets book for 4 quid a couple of months ago, on the way to The Borderline, which made up for the so-so band that night.

I undestand entirely that historical value thing you mentioned, Dayna.

Personally, I try not to get into collecting things, since I could sink into the deep end of that, the hoarder stage of grabbing everything you can get in your hands. Especially everything old - to save it from getting lost forever.

But apart of music I do collect, in a small way, old postcards of a few selected places - like my childhood home town, Turku.

I do know what you mean by hoarding. I think some of that is a product of what my Mom calls junk that my Grandparents saved over the years.
Some of the things they've saved are interesting, but my Grandma in particular grew up during The Depression & got in a habit of saving things that seem funny now. Like napkins, plastic spoons & newspapers, ect.

My son collects Lego Star Wars figures. I note with horror that, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of thinking up this way of seperating parents and their cash, Lego have created a new set of characters (although, phew, they're not for sale). They include Amy Winehouse (bottles not included) and, pehaps the funniest, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Actually I tend to collect great acting performances - on DVD, or video. Sometimes I'll keep a movie just for one scene. A bit like collecting an album for one track. Oh, sorry, there I go again...
