Mary Ann Kennedy on Radio 3

Postby howard male » Tue Oct 16, 2007 1:06 pm

I thought Mary Ann Kennedy was quite charming last night. A wide(ish) selection of tunes, a nod to Charlie, and a genuine infectuous enthusiasm, made me forgive the number of overly tasteful folky things she played.

What did anyone else think?

Yay - anyone who plays the Peatbog Faeries AND Kila in the same programme has my undying devotion. I have to say the Skipinnish track was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have heard in a long time. Fab.

Yes, she was good. That combination of (quote from playlist) Musicians from Dobe and Okavango Regions, and Jo Mango was magic. Just a couple of inspired tracks like that is enough to keep me happy.

To judge from comments on the Radio message board, Mary Ann is far and away the most popular of the deps for Andy, and I can see why - she has a very engaging style of broadcasting, and her range covers more of the Kershaw world than the rest of us.

You're still my fave Charlie. Play a bit of folk and wear a nice off the shoulder number and they'll love you just as much as Mary.

I was sold with the Andy Garufuna and Tiken Jah Fakoly opening tracks through Toumani Diabate to Orchestre Baobab.

Some tracks not to my taste in between but it we would get bored if we enjoyed everything we heard.

Well, I'm afraid I've had to reassess my appraisal of Ms Kennedy. This Monday night she stretched my patience to breaking point by constantly moving from the sublime to the banal on a track by track basis. So she has now joined the Verity twins in being too much like hard work as a listening experience for this grumpy old listener - I gave up after half an hour.

By playing a Mahmoud Ahmed or Symmetric Orchestra track one minute, and then jumping to some highly polished, overly tasteful Scottish folk pap then next, it was a bit like feeling you were blissfully sunbathing on some faraway beach only to suddenly be slapped around the face with a cold, wet fish. Then you'd go back to sunbathing again, and then, minutes later, you'd get attacked with the cold, wet fish again, and so on. This effectively made it impossible to enjoy the decent stuff she did play, having been driven to distraction by the anodyne coffee-table banality of the folk-lite she alternated it with.

Glad I've got that out of my system!

you should see my coffee table sometime. it's got studs and straps and..oops, too much information!

needless to say, some people pay good money to realise the virtual experience you've just described.

I thought what I heard was okay but I had to dash out halfway so I'll listen again sometime.

I had turned on the BBC radio player thinking I was going to listen to Charlie's Nov 10th show on 'listen again'. I heard "Ere Mela Mela", was in and out of the room the computer is in, but then kept hearing bagpipes which I thought was curious...Anyways, I finally figured out it wasn't Charlie, almost turned it off then thought that would be rude to not listen just because it wasn't who I had intended to listen to. I must say, she plays music I don't often listen to, which can be a good thing. So, once I got over that aspect (and the realization that I didn't have a clue what day it was), I enjoyed her show. It kind of reminded me of the opposite of that which I can hear on "world music" shows in this neck of the woods on alternative radio stations - rootsy American folk interspersed with music from other parts of the globe. And, she does have a very lovely voice and way about her.

Another interesting, balanced and enjoyable prog. I think I can nail my colours to MAK's mast - Global Gathering is coming back again on Radio Jock (thank god for internet).

What of that UFOs Over Bamako? It took me by surprise and I'm not sure if I liked it. (thank god for listen again)
