Andy Kershaw

Postby Hugh Weldon » Tue Jul 24, 2007 9:39 pm

I'm sure a lot of folk here are keen Andy Kershaw listeners, so I'm sorry to report Andy will not be able to do his show for another 3 months, according to the Radio 3 message board. A friend on the Kershaw Yahoo group further reports today that he is "not at all well".

Let's wish him a speedy recovery and hope he returns before too long. Losing Charlie's Saturday night programme last year was a real blow and has left a big gap, I am especially missing the ping pongs and the live sessions, not to mention keeping in touch with the best new records.

Of course we come across interesting music in all sorts of ways but radio has always been a fairly essential source for me. Losing regular access to these two great DJs except for the World Service programme is a real shame.

So sad to hear that Andy's not well. I do hope he's picked up sufficiently to enjoy his music and the Manx summer.

Lucy's Monday spot is much appreciated, although she is yet to play Ivor Cutler or Dolly Parton!

Regards,

I'm a guest on DJ Ritu's show on Saturday 11 August, from around 9.00 o'clock, I think.

And I deputise for Andy in his Monday Night slot on Radio 3 on 10 & 17 September

Lucy Duran will continue in his place through August, with Joe Boyd contributing a couple of shows in September/October too

Hurray - looks like Radio 3 bosses DO pay attention to listeners' comments!

Great news Charlie! Will be fantastic to hear you in a looser format than the World Service programme again, don't suppose there's any chance of squeezing in a ping pong?

Also good to hear that Joe Boyd will be doing a couple of shows, he did some excellent sit-ins on Saturday night last year.

Good to know Charlie and Joe will be depping for Andy as i find Lucy unlistenable: the smug voice, the insistence on playing endless West African and Cuban tunes at the expense of anything else, the way the entire show oftens tends to reflect on her. She's always admitted - to me in conversation - that she knows nothing about any music beyond West African , not even paying attention to Beatles/Stones when she was a teenager during the 60s so she really is not the right person to fill Kershaw's eclectic shoes. Joe and Charlie will be a much more comfortable fit.

Lucy Duran is OK in my book - her choice might be limited but I'm happy with West African stuff. And who cares if she was never interested in the Beatles or Stones? Why should that disqualify her from doing a world music show? The trouble with Kershaw is that he actually plays very little world music on his show, unless you count Country music and the Clash as world music that is.

I checked some past playlists and I looked at one from June 4 2007 (I forget when he went off air). This is what he played:

Peregoyo y su Combo Vacana: La Tintorera ('The Shark') (4.28)
album: El Rey del Currulao

Etoile 2000: Afro Manicero (4.00)
album: Senegal-Afro-Cubano 1978-1997 (Los Mejores)

Kostas Moundakis: Haniotiki Mou Rodaria (3.47)
album: A Tribute to the Great Kretan His Most Wonderful Songs

Mil-Quinhento '1500' & Conjunto Popombo de Nampula: ¡ Saba Saba ! (4.31)
From Mozambique
album: ¡ Saba Saba !

Andy Palacio & the Garifuna Collective: Gaganbadiba (Take Advice) (4.18)
album: Watina
Cumbancha Records CMB-CD-3

Benny More: Dolor y perdon (3.42)
Featuring the Banda Gigante; recorded 1955
album: Canta Boleros

Thione Seck: Borom Keur (4.49)
album: African Pearls 4: Senegal - The Teranga Spirit

Kekele: Mandoyi parts 1 & 2 (10.19)
Nyboma Mwandido, Loko Massengo, Wuta Mayi, Bumba Massa (vocals); Syran Mbenza, Rigo Star Bamundele, Jose Palmer (guitars); Vincent Hamandjian (bass); Komba Bellow (drums); Deba Sungu, Assane Mbaye (percussion); Viviane Arnoux (accordion); Jimmy Mvondo (sax)
Recorded 22 May 2007 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London as part of London African Music Festival 2007

Argentina: Guajira Marchenera (4.49)
album: Argentina

Adriana Calcanhotto: Vambora (4.12)
album: Maritmo

Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto from Colombia: El Manolo (Bullerengue) (4.37)
album: Un Fuego de Sangre Pura

Balla Diakite & Djigui Traore: Woloni (5.09)
Balla Diakite (vocals/bolofleni); Djigui Traore (m'bolon)
album: Balla Diakite & Djigui Traore

Ernesto Sanchez 'El Jilguero del Huascaran' Fajardo: Aguita de Curayacu (2.17)
album: El Jilguero del Huascaran

Kekele:
Affaire Mokuwa (5.44)
Ponton La Belle (9.00)

Antonio Nobrega: Sambada dos Mestres (4.59)
album: Madeira que cupim nao roi

Kilby Snow: John Henry (2.07)
album: Masters of Old Time Country Autoharp

Kouyate Sory Kandia: Souaressi (4.46)
album: African Pearls 2: Guinee - Cultural Revolution

Agreed, I chose this at rndom, but it obviously wasn't a very good week for The Clash (none) and only one country (old timey). Everything else was world music, whichever way you look at it.

The week before looked at Congolese rumba (no country, no Clash). The week after was a field trip to Algeria (which might have mentioned The Clash as it featured an interview with Rachid Taha).

Kershaw programmes 28 May and 4 June

Actually, both these shows were presented by Lucy. She rarely sounds truly comfortable in front of a mic, but I'm enjoying her musical selections.
