Does anyone like all reggae, rock'n'roll, etc. indiscriminately past the age of about 16 or 17? Well, except for promo people who are paid to like whatever they're paid to like. I'm not being fair — I've known a few who have admitted that their current project is not very good. I think part of the issue is linguistic and a matter of shorthanding. I say, "I like world music (or dub or jazz or whatever)" a fair amount, and to those who don't spend much time with music (most of the people in the world, poor them) it just goes over their heads. It's like saying, "I like MacDonalds" (which I would never do!). They simply haven't had the time or interest to develop much depth of knowledge about musical genres. To them music is some sort of a consumer product, not a cultural messenger or art form.

As regards the "jackdaw" programming, I think the idea is strong but it would work best if the music is really "framed" and explained, not just played. You know, quote people from here, get 'em to say something over the phone. Bring the culture and art right up to the front.

I'm very glad your health is improving. So is mine, by and large, and I never, never want to be ill again!

I set up a site today http://www.myspace.com/chillifried

I've got 4 friends, 2 of whom look like album covers.

It's all quite exiting really.

welcome, Jamie, I've just invited you to be my friend too.

The next thing you can do is add somebody's song to your site.

I had Laxula's Soberbia last week, and have just switched to Yah Oud by Elizabeth Ayoub. There seems to be more point in highlighting these unreleased songs than simply playing a readily available one.

If you want to add one, go to the site of the applicable artist, click on the song you like, and you'll find 'add' as an option on their sound file.

You click on 'add' and voila, it's your song until you choose another, which instantly replaces it.

You can do the same with videos, with the difference that you can have quite a few videos available at the same time, but only one sound file at a time.

I set up a Myspace nearly a year ago now, but being my usual procrastinating self I did absolutely nothing with it. I even grew quite comfortable with having my one sole 'friend' Tom, and was reluctant to spoil that one-sided relationship. But I now feel like I'm missing out on something, so I've started to update it. "Add" requests are on their way.

you are judged by the company you keep.

Well, I must admit I'm torn as to what to do with my mySpace. Prompted by Norman (where you lead I will follow, must be the coat!) I 'set up' my own page and at first wanted to contribute with some great 'thought pieces'

Then, after seeing Charlie's, I found had leanings towards the music side of things ... perhaps I should concentrate on the North East music scene at large .... but then on seeing Jamies thought it might be better to concentrate on perhaps one specific thing like the Ukulele Allstars maybe.

Inspired by the photographs of Con and of course Gordon I've thought of another direction.

That is .... if you are beautiful then you are welcome to be my friend.

Coming your way soon .... a myspace site which is very easy on the eye.

roll up .... roll up ... get on board early ... before it really takes off.

Con, are you 25 years old & from Belize? I notice that fRoots magazine is a 27-year-old female from the UK, maybe you should get together.

That's the great thing about the internet isn't it? You can be whoever you please. But no, that isn't me, and I hesitate to ask what site you are referring to?

Why, http://www.myspace.com/conmurphy of course. He only has Tom to call a friend as well.

Now, I'm not going to give my url away, but you might be able to spot me as a friend of both Charlie and Jamie.

Con's got lots of fwends (this is getting like school), including a doggie and a book illustration by Josef Lada.

You wouldn't be "Dominic", by chance, with the inspirational...."May All Beings Be Happy"?

You know...for a while now I've been on the verge of writing to you lot, who keep me thoroughly entertained and educated at this forum (and you know who you are) to find out how on earth you actually have the time to post so much. It's not like it's all flippant, ill-informed rubbish either (well, not ALL of it!!) You seem to have time to not only listen and ingest music, but you also read copiously and widely, see films, go to exhibitions....it's endless! And then you have time to assimilate all this knowledge into well-written posts and embark upon fascinating discussions.

How do they do it? I was wondering. But I never had the time to write the post.

And now - on top of all that - you've all started up blimmin' MySpace pages! I can't keep up!

Don't you lot 'ave 'omes to go to?!

That's the imponderable that resulted in me taking 10 months to start fleshing mine out. I think it's great that the MySpace generation are so self-assured, in touch with their feelings and open about themselves that they can be so confident and public in their use of it. But it does all seem a bit banal and self-absorbed on the personal front. If you've got a talent, something to sell, that's different. But given that it's quick and easy to set up (Julian, I updated mine in the time it took my wife to watch Miss Marple on Sunday), I thought why not just try to use it as a portal to those talents. You never know who might be passing through, or where you might be able to take them. That's my modest aim, anyway. You could always dedicate yours to the study of Maths, Gordon!

I was propositioned this morning on MySpace. "Amanda" sent me email from her "friend's account" telling me twice that her business was fun and that fun was her business and then a few dot dot dots. My wife says that with a name like Amanda, "she" was probably a transvestite. Well, I've been fooled before.
