Today was stressy because the water board turned off our taps for six hours to change the street's lead pipes. For many people across the world, easy access to water is a luxury that we take for granted and I was humbled by our guest on this AWIL, when she spoke about her early years in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. A daily trek with pots & pans to collect water from the well was simply part of her routine, even post-apartheid, and, even in South Africa where enormous wealth has never been evenly distributed. Nevertheless, Noluyanda Mqulwana, ‘Nolly’ to friends, developed her passion for dance of all kinds, taking in local styles as well as the discipline of ballet. Her skills, talent, and determination soon propelled her across the globe, performing with dance companies from Switzerland to Singapore, and for the last three years she’s been touring with Winston Ruddle’s ‘Mother Africa’, his latest brainchild, descended from the Cirque Afrique project. Nolly plays many vital roles within the production, as dancer, singer, and choreographer. Mother Africa is part circus, part music-theatre, infused with glorious South African harmonies, a live band including kora, and a pan-African cast of acrobats, vocalists, and dancers, its theme centred around life-stories from Nolly’s hometown Khayelitsha. The water is back on! So catch the vibrant, visual, musical treat that is Mother Africa before March 12th at Holborn’s Peacock Theatre!
