It's only recently been sent to me for an fRoots review, however the clip I posted is from a year or so ago. So I don't really know what's going on. But glad to have it anyway.

The Leyla McCalla album seems to be a bit Marmite-y. It's grown on me a lot with each listen. I sort of know what you mean about an academic exercise Rob, but the bottom line for me is, I like her voice.

There's another new and groovy album out: Femi Temowo's 'The Music Is The Feeling'. He was Amy's guitarist. The album is very jazzy with a strong afro feel to it, plus a string orchestra(!)

I predict that a certain Will Vine of this parish will find much to like on it.

Thanks for all the posts - there's a lot going on here.

The first album by Leyla McCalla was all a bit restrained, and polite. She's really opened up with this one. I'd say the same for the other Chocky Drops female singer, Rhiannon Giddens. Her last album (a bit late for this thread now) is excellent. The trouble with the two women CCD singers may well lie in their classical music background - Rhiannon was trained as an opera singer and Leyla studied cello. Maybe they've started to roughen up their edges.

I don't know. I've just watched the video Leyla McCalla video: it just seems a bit joyless to me - like an awful lot of music I hear, I should add.

Rob, I'm with you on the word 'joyless'. It's prevalent in a fair amount of roots music. Another word might be 'earnest'. I'd far rather the occasional bum note, or injection of some emotion into the music. A while ago I heard a famous classical musician (Rubenstein?) say he often played the wrong notes, but it didn't matter, because his heart was in the music!

Wasn't that Bernard Manning? Maybe something from here?

I would never knowingly quote Bernard Manning. If I have, many apologies.

Instead:
"Do you have the scrolls?"
"No. It's just the way I'm walking"

I always thought the 'notes, not necessarily in the right order' quote was from Les Dawson? (If my memory is correct he was, in fact, a capable pianist.)

Still doing my best to fly the flag for the new and the groovy...

Heavenless a lovely new album (well 6 track EP) from veteran Jamaican trombonist Vin Gordon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIYXXV7pJus
I got mine from Juno Downloads for £3.74, that's less than the price of a cup of coffee in some parts of London.

I've also been enjoying Blues and Ballads the latest from ex-North Mississippi Allstar Luther Dickinson. Here he is with Mavis Staples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbTTI8ayRwY

Sterns have got an album out from Brazilian rapper Emicida (a new name to me), partly recorded in Angola and Cape Verde. A lot of it is as infectious as hell too. Such as this :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zypOpcW62T8

Did any of that do anything for you?
