16.5.66

Postby will vine » Sun May 15, 2016 9:24 am

Try not too weep too much when you realise that Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds were both released 50 years ago tomorrow. This Radio 4 documentary celebrates the fact and is mildly informative and something to listen to while you're waiting for something better to come along. It's on BBC Radio 4 iPlayer.

Despite an originally announced release date of 16th May, Blonde on Blonde appears not to have been available in the shops until the end of June or the beginning of July (August in the UK) but being released on the same day as Pet Sounds makes a better story ...

....depends if you bought an import of BoB. Not that I did, but the one I have has the misprint inside, with that strange track called 'Stuck Inside of Mobile with Thee'.

My BoB has "Memphis Blues Again" and I believe it is an earlier issue than the copies with thee misprint, although I didn't buy it immediately on UK release as it cost 50/- and I'd read that side four was only eleven minutes long .... so I bought Highway 61 Revisited (which I didn't yet have) first instead (only 32/6)

More BoB research -

Fascinating, John.

Is it only Dylan that attracts such forensic obsession? I wonder if the researcher's second specialist subject is: 'Grassy knolls - Dallas - November 22, 1963'.

Talking of which, I did have a US copy that had a longer fade-out on "It Takes A Lot To Laugh", and a different version of "Buick 6". Maybe the researcher can find out for me what happened to it.

The alt. 'From a Buick 6' (take 4) appears to have been accidentally included on early US stereo copies of the LP (and more recently was made available on the "deluxe" edition of 'The Cutting Edge')

And fifty years ago tonight since Dylan's Royal Albert Hall concert that eventually transpired to have been in Manchester. But was it the Judas shouter who Bob didn't believe, or another heckler who shouted something just afterwards (unintelligible on the recording)? And was it Bob, or Robbie, or someone else who made the demand for increased volume?

I didn't buy my Blonde on Blonde until 1975, and the 'Stuck Inside Of Mobile With Thee' error was still extant. Was it valuable ? (No matter, it was nicked years ago.)

I've wondered about the pronunciation - 'fooking' sounds a bit Mancunian, and I don't think Dylan would have been in the city long enough, or cared about, mimicking the accent. Still, it's done. It's over. Who cares? But I will still read all the articles/interviews that analyse and speculate.

And it is fifty years today since Bob's motorcycle mishap.
