Rev Gary Davis

Postby Alan Balfour » Wed Aug 27, 2014 1:02 pm

Back in April last year I posted news of a forthcoming Davis biog. The following has been drawn to my attention:

What a top dude he was. One record I heard he gave an advert for his guitar tuition classes in the middle of a number. I was very impressed.

Nah, his missus used to cook up a big bowl of homminy grits, etc - according to various ex-students like Aurora Block. All teachers get nowadays from their students is an occasional bag of coffee.

+ houmous, or pea pastes of all hues, cake, bread, 'juice', local cider. I've yet to take 'meat' or fish, but most things aren't ruled out as far as I've heard yet. But what do I, permanently wet around the ears, know. Plus my music 'teacher(s)' are moving to France, and I can't afford to get there... Still they'll visit blighty, all's not lost (yet, yet, yet). Considered taking some halva over to an informal music teacher just today

if a new subduction zone opens up between London & deepest Glos, & the distance between shrinks considerably, look out for me on yr doorstep carrying edible provisions & a solid wood ebony guitar pick.

1st dream lesson would be Charlie Parker tunes for plectrum guitar, taught at a speed suitable for the musically challenged :)

I could do "Billie's Bounce" and "Now's The Time" - both in F.

ok you're showing up my Bird ignorance now, I was thinking Ornithology, Scrapple from the Apple, or Hot House. P'rhaps a bit of space rock improv would be safer, followed by some introductory jazz chording

I don't know how to play those. As for jazz chording, here, let Emily do it. She's a great teacher.

One of the intersting things about him was how he became blues guru by appointment to the San Francisco acid-rock scene in the mid-60s. Jorma Kaukonen and Jerry Garcia both learned from him and I think Country Joe McDonald and Barry Melton, too, (who, I am guessing, would have been introduced to him by Sam Charters). And, of course, Ry Cooder took lessons from him, too.

His influence on San Fran psychedelic blues-rock deserves an entire chapter in the book in it own right.

Wizz Jones did an anti Gary Davis thing in mid-song at the Ritzy on Sunday, saying he wasn't taking on any more students. No mention of eats.
