The weekend's here and I'm off all next week. If that isn't a good excuse to shake a tail-feather, I'd like to know what is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaKVs5mJ4Bg

And heading off to Italy next week with fellow Shout Collectivists for our annual jump blues party is enough to make me jump, jive and wail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4V8pbg3rNU

Hope the culture secretary hears of your good work in Europe. Jump into Line sounds like a great project which will likely see you honoured in due course. Good luck to you and your dedicated team.

On the subject of The Weekend Starts Here, I note that both you and Rob (currently caught up on the tricky jazz tide) have referred back beyond Ready Steady Go (from whence comes our strap line) in your choices, to the days of 6.5 Special and Oh Boy, which is fine, but now, as I recall, The Tube was also originally in that Friday teatime spot and similarly anticipated the weekend, so think on.....for next weekend or whenever.

I'll have no internet access for a week from tomorrow, so I'm posting these links now, on the understanding that no-one clicks on them until the sun's gone over the yardarm on Friday afternoon:

(The second clip is in response to Will's suggestion of something from the era of The Tube)

Last weekend I was bemoaning my lot. Overcome yet again by a lack of time, money, and most sadly, the energy to get up to London to Jamie's Jamboree gig, I considered that my gigging days were over. Shouldn't I have given that old game up a long time ago anyway? Within minutes of deciding on such a retirement I discovered that none other than the latest incarnation of The Magic Band are playing here, in Hertford, tonight.

Yes, they are now their own tribute band, and yes, they look like old WWF wrestlers now rather than mascarra snakes, and yes, I can imagine the whole thing will be played out amidst an ocean of old greyhairs like myself, but - it's a live band, and it's a drink. But, best of all it's only ten minutes from home and on a Friday night.

THE WEEKEND STARTS HERE - (Dear God, What am I thinking of?)

Ed Sullivan Show, late 1968 -

The Ed Sullivan Show was shown I think towards the end, rather than the beginning of the weekend, but this next clip is certainly from a Friday evening -

Can I just say at this point that I prefer Martha and The Vandellas to The Supremes? (My camp cred is now toast, I know, but it's a very close thing.)

Will, I very nearly walked out on The Magic Band when I saw them in London a few years ago. Not because they were bad, but because they were so good. The longing for the Captain to come bounding out from the wings shouting "Bat Chain Puller!" or similar was physically painful. I hope you have a good night. When they are on form they are still the best white blues band to ever exist.

My contribution to this week's thread. My mum bought this when it came out. She was very cool, my mum. In some ways...

I had a brilliant night, thanks Adam. Can't remember when I had a better one.

One of the toughest conundra in musical aesthetics. (I hope you appreciate my Latin plural there.)

If I had to decide, I think I would say the Vandellas' greatest records are better, but that the Supremes made a lot more great records.

I do appreciate it, Andy, and I further appreciate your giving the matter the urgent and serious attention it duly warrants. I tend to agree with your conclusion too, but The Supremes carried on making great records after Diana had flounced off. This does perhaps give them a statistical advantage over Martha and the Vandellas.

Meanwhile, grown men are reduced to gently steaming pools of melted marshmallow:

I'm not going to choose between the Supremes and the Vandellas, love them both but my vote has to go to a third party -

I love the horns on this. They sound like they come from Dr. John's Gris Gris album.
