Zouk?

Postby David Flower » Sat Feb 01, 2014 10:09 pm

so what ever happened to zouk? Any recent sightings?

this is nearly 30 years old, and has the cheese to prove it, but also killer hook and horns

and this banjo guy Kila is/was interesting. Also from Martinique he once represented France in the eurovision. Odd choice given his rampant anti-colonialism

i was told once that zouk originated in Cap Verde. No idea if this is true.

Yeah, Zouk was a street I passed down. Loved to pieces Earthworks' Hurricane Zouk compilation, Frankie Vincent and all that and a few Kassav records. As you say, some killer hooks. There must have been much to find and enjoy there but, like me, don't you just get distracted and take other paths? I've never been able to keep up on all that's going on. I liken my musical explorations these days to rooting around in the recycling yard. Maybe I'll have another little dig around the Zouk pile now. Thanks David.

I'm curious as there aren't many styles I can think of that have been as big as zouk and disappeared. Or so it seems. Not in UK, but it was stadium level in France and elsewhere. At least Kassav were. Where did it go?
I wasn't so much into it either, but came across those 2 tunes above on LPs while sorting out some vinyl today. I've either got to the age when this starts to happens, or I'm a hip young thing into his vinyl! Actually I'm sorting into 3 piles: charity, keep and sell. It's very interesting to see which artists now command good prices (my stuff goes back to the early '70s). Sold a Roy Harper for £40 the other week would you believe, and a Joseph Spence for £25. There are a few tricky areas which I don't want to keep, aren't worth anything and would probably be wasted in charity shops. For example I've got quite a lot of Hungarian and Spanish folk LPs, which I'll probably try and give to someone interested.

If you're ebaying them, David, don't be shy to post the link here. Lots of vinyl nuts, music freaks and accumulators here.

Zouk's still around, but all the stuff I've heard recently has been a bit drippy ("Lovers Zouk" as they call it), nothing with the hook and verve of the best tunes from the 80s heyday.

i don't know about ebay, I use amazon. CDs for some time and i've now embarked on the vinyl. A garage length of the stuff. I must have posted 75 or so albums and it's very easy to do. So long as something's already their system (and it's remarkable how much is) you just go to 'sell yours here', fill in details (undercutting any existing offers of course) and post. If i sell they just credit the card I already use to buy. It would take ages to stick it all up on ebay I imagine, or on this forum. I don't bother with anything under £12, less postage, as it would be take too long.
The only flaw in the system is they calculate the postage without knowing size or weight. I sold a heavy art book last year for £15, but the postage to Ireland came to £16, not the £2.60 or whatever they'd reckoned. So I wrote to the buyer and he agreed to post me a €10 note, and we were both happy. I'll allow for that in future, and I now only sell to UK or Europe (you can choose) , not worldwide.
