time passes slowly up here on the mountain

Postby ritchie » Mon Aug 07, 2006 7:21 pm

Hey, how does the time thing work on postings?

I seem to be an hour out but then what happens when Tom posts from across the pond or Julian from the land of the midnight sun?

Can you get an idea of where people are by the time of their postings?

I resisted from putting a SAOL in about postings from 'Deepest Fife'

Ritchie, I think all posts take the 'local' time to the server, ie current UK time (currently GMT +1). I think the only reason you're out by an hour is that unlike some of us you don't go anally to your profile to adjust the setting on your profile when the clocks change.

I'm posting this at 11:52am BST (Bristish Summer Time). But at the bottom of the screen it says all times are GMT, so I expect this post to appear at 10:52am (GMT) or is it now Universal Time?

Gordon

it's 7:34 AM where I'm at !
I think it's kind of neat. I almost adjusted it, but I like knowing what time it is there & here both. I thought it was funny when I was up online one night & my freind emailed me at 5:00AM & said good morning.

but, according to my screen, it was 7.53pm. So, what does it all mean, eh? Probably that I obediently told my computer that I live in Japan (where the sun, apparently, comes out at midnight - no wonder I rarely see it) when I registered.

Us folks up here in Fife have been puzzled by the 'SAOL' abbreviation (along with being puzzled about lots of other things). We think it's part of that text-type language that whizzy types from Gateshead use.

All Google suggested was 'Structured Audio Orchestra Language', but that can't be right. Can it? After sacrificing a few goats, we think that it might stand for 'smart arsed one liners'. But that can't be right either. Can it?

Anyway, you think you've got problems. This British Summer Time malarky is a real bugger up here beyond the Firth of Forth (or 'the pale' as it might be called). Every Spring we have to dig up our sundials and reposition them, only to dig 'em up again in October.

As a self appointed expert at this acronym business, I can tell you that - with reference to your use of sundials - the acronym SAOL means:

Summer's Angle Of Light

That can't be right. The Angles never got this far north. The sight of Picts scratching themselves was too much for them, I suspect.

It's 11:07 AM here. I know I have put things on here that say 3:00 in the morning. It's fun for me, to think of where I'm writing to. I wish I was able to actually talk to people in UK, or where ever else. At least it's not like I'm calling at 3:00 AM just to talk about music. That might be fun too, for me at least. LOL!

Postby ritchie » Mon Aug 14, 2006 6:47 pm

Gordon,

Dominic was the first one to use the term SAOL.

I'm sure Howard has accused Con of doing it in the past.

and Dayna .....don't ever, ever. no matter what time it is, ring me up to talk about music ;-)

I don't think I'm really brave enough to do that. I wouldn't want to cause a problem with someone's girlfreind or wife.
I might try calling a record shop there some day to order something. If I called at 3:00, in the morning I could just get excited about listening to an answering service.
