Phantom Limb@Lexington

A few forumistas have mentioned some enthusiasm for the Bristol band - they are playing this coming Thursday 21st at the Lexington in Angel: perhaps their first London headline gig? I saw them there supporting the naff Robyn Hitchcock last year and was very impressed by their short set - the album The Pines is really, really good.

Stunning! PL are really, really good. I mean, the musicians are tasty and play together beautifully as a unit and the pianist is just superb. But it's Yolanda who is the star here - a great voice and wonderful presence: to witness a big black woman address the audience "hello my lovers" in a West Country bur was worth admission alone. Forget Alabama Shakes, Phantom Limb are way ahead. I'm ready to call them my favourite contemporary UK band, the strength of Yolanda's singing and songwriting shooing them past Errol Linton and Alabama 3. The Lexington was rammed last night - old school pub gig: hot and sweaty and crowded - so I'm guessing they're on their way up. Catch them when you can.

for a good while I was betting Bristol's Phantom Limb confused with Brixton's The Severed Limb.

I kept on feeling really pleased for sarf landun's very own 50s-inspired rockabilly, R&B, ska skifflers and being pleasantly surprised that they were doing so well. Check em out, they're a fantastic live act.

Just got hold of the album ('The Pines') and, on the strength of listening to it twice, I can confirm Garth's view that it's good, and I might even go along with really good, but I think that I would draw the line in the sand before I got to the point of pronouncing it really, really good.
