Not exactly a very new release (came out in Feb last year), but came across this only now. Can’t find a full album stream and the snippets are a bit unsatisfying as the tracks seem to take longer than 30 sec to take shape, but what I read and heard so far (including the tinymixtapes review) sounds quite interesting and promising
Record company description: Pingipung presents "The Kenya Sessions" - an enchanting cooperative mission featuring Sven Kacirek, our experimental drummer and electronic producer, and musicians from Kenya.
"The Kenya Sessions" is Pingipung’s second album by Sven Kacirek. It is the result of an extended visit to the country with live and fieldrec sessions which he later processed in his studio in Hamburg. Sven Kacirek plays with local Kenyan stars such as 80 year-old female vocalist Ogoya Nengo, or with Okumo Korengo, who delivers amazing patterns with his "Nyatiti", a traditional string instrument.
kk, Spotify have a full album stream - I moved the cursor across several tracks to see how or if the songs develop (not the most respectful way to listen to it but I think it gives you a good idea) but nothing hit me. The colloboration seem to clash rather than blend but I can accept this cursory listen may not give it justice.
I have now listened to the whole album a few times, and for me it works very well and I like it a lot. For me, the studio work does complement the source material (it’s not always possible to tell what actually is added later and what is the field recording) and the album manages to sound both rootsy and “produced” at the same time.
Not much on it online, but here’s another review I found
