The F@*k You school of guitar playing ?

Why do the blues sound like the blues?
Why do certain chord changes work so well?
Adam (and other wise musicians) will answer any question you can think of about how music works.

Indeed, another great FY piano god.

As I was reading through the thread I thought of The Who - but I see you beat me to it!

As for male FY vocalists - I'm sure there must be some! I'm tempted to say Dylan ... but his entire vocal style is something of an FY (and that's coming from a fan) so I'm not sure he has mere "moments"! I obviously need to think of a "proper" singer.

Well there's Johnny Rotten - "we mean it, maaaaan!" - more of a sneer than a F.Y - although the intention was much the same, no doubt. Dylan? I know what you mean but he doesn't angry enough. Disgusted, yes. Angry, hmmm...
Lennon's cry of "I wanna be free!" on The Beatles version of "Money" springs to mind, also the last "al-right!" on "Revolution" (the single version).

Hip-hop, like heavy metal, should in theory be chock full of F.Y moments but in practice it's more often empty boasting and blathering. Eminem's delivery of the title line "I Just Don't Give A Fuck", however, sounds convincing to me, as does the way he sings "'cos I'm a criminal!" on "Criminal". I believe him. Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" does the trick too.

We're getting somewhere here, I think. A true School of Fuck You moment, in either vocal or instrumental performance, must be inspired by a successful venting of serious rage, a taking of personal vengeance in music for real or imagined slights or wrongs. It has to be real, it can't be faked. I do appreciate that this is an entirely subjective assessment but all I can say is you damn well know it when you hear it!

I'm glad you mentioned Patti, Ted. I have to watch my self. She's still got it, though, even if she does now resemble the original English Teacher From Hell. The way she says "For waging a war based on LIES!!" here on this clip at 3:28 - made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...

I was thinking about Lennon ... but he had that great roar of a voice (especially in the early years) so he's almost a given. Johnny Rotten had it as an inbuilt style, so it's hard to know when it's real and when it's just a mannerism.

Eminem's delivery of the title line "I Just Don't Give A Fuck", however, sounds convincing to me, as does the way he sings "'cos I'm a criminal!" on "Criminal". I believe him. Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" does the trick too.

PE definitely ... I'm sure there's a few of their's that qualify. Eminem before he got smug, for sure.

I've heard Costello do it live ... but less so on record. I think "Riot Act" has it ... particularly in the middle eight ... but that's sending an FU to himself as much as it is to anyone else.

How can you guys forget Johnny Thunders who invented that great snarling FU school of guitar? Admittedly he learnt it from Link Wray and Pete Townsend (also a Wray disciple) but those 2 NYDolls albums are full of great FU guitar moments. His leading disciple, Steve Jones, put the technique to very effective use with the Pistols - listen to his playing on Pretty Vacant, especially that final guitar coda!

Nice to see this thread revived. Here's one of Iggy's last really notable contributions to the genre. Iggy plays rhythm guitar on this but it's HIS riff and I remember thinking when I first heard it: this music belongs to Iggy in the same way that Bo Diddley's music belonged to Bo Diddley.

I loved watching this young man play, how he turned his head to the side after his talking.

Hi Judith and Adam, He's great, makes me wanna hear all John's guitar work isolated,
which will probably happen eventually as there is a growing selection of other isolated tracks out there (as previously discussed)
"chew some gum" was another good tip -LOL

Why can't I have students like this??? He's got nearly all John's "banjo" chords down.
