Jan Bradley: Mama Didn't Lie

A Curtis Mayfield song. Original on Chess. Perfect pop record.

I'd forgotten all about this song. We loved it. Would sing along in the car - I'm of that California generation that spent a lot of time riding around in cars ('daddy's car' if you were girls) singing along to the radio with the windows open. It's so interesting, how a song can be forgotten and then when you hear it again, it's as though there was no passage of time between then and now.

In other words, you consumed pop at its most perfect in the most perfect way - driving around California singing along to it in American rock'n'roll cars.

Not that I'm jealous or anything...

No. Unfortunately, I only saw that in films. I think they were a little before my time and in the larger towns farther south. Except for Orange Julius and A&W Root Beer, the drive-ins we went to were small, independently owned and without carhops. They either had drive-in windows that you ordered your food from without getting out of your car, or you had to park and walk up to the window to order. Few of them, if any, had inside seating. I remember one where you could order 5 hamburgers for a dollar on Wednesday nights (mid 60's) - a favorite of those with large families.

The first time I was ever in a MacDonalds was in Boston in the late 70's. Boston didn't have milkshakes (theirs were too thin which is odd considering ice cream was a priority item in Boston) or hamburgers (theirs were 2 pieces of bread and a very dry patty) like we had on the west coast so we went to a MacDonalds. We didn't go back.
