is Bieber any good? - I've never knowingly heard him, but I thought the point of these birthday lists was to compile musicians there was some sort of a consensus view about, who matter musically or are enjoyed by us forumpstas or that Charlie would have been pleased to see noted. I can't see listing every musician who is alive in the world today, or has sold zillions of recordings, is worth undertaking. Of course this is a probably all a win-up anyway, I don't like the taste of this maggoty bait though ;-)

No, and I speak as somebody less hostile to contemporary pop than some chums in here. Imagine the worst track on a Britney Spears album sung (via autotune) by a sparkly boy who'd come sixth on The X Factor.

Although he has inadvertently given us one of the great joys of contemporary life, the website Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber (on account of him resembling a baby dyke).

I've heard him - wasn't impressed, am I wrong? I do hope Andy's again got something interesting in the way of cultural curiosity or anecdote to add, to redeem the lacklustrosity of the subject matter!

Ed Sheeran is dull. Not without moderate talent, but very dull. And annoyingly he scrapes together just enough '''''authenticity''''' in some fans' eyes that he's used as a stick with which to beat unapologetically manufactured pop.

One of my ex-students, Peter Robinson, is now a rather successful music journo, and in search of a zeitgeist-defining piece last year he lamented how British pop was being taken over by what he called The New Boring. Ed, he said, was the figurehead for this regrettable trend.

Are Coldplay part of this movement? Or are they The Old Boring?

I think Peter saw them, not inaccurately, as opening the floodgates.

The Harbingers of Boring ! But that is too good a name to award to Mr Paltrow and his whiney cronies, so I hereby copyright it a name for an arty prog-jazz-funk-punk combo and nominate myself as off-stage lyricist (Pete Sinfield style).

Norman
My girls are currently getting excited about the line-up of rock acts at this year's Reading Festival and would be very insulted at the suggestion that they're Justin Bieber fans who use text speak.

No he isn't!

Actually, he was incorrectly included under the 19th in the original list (which can't be amended). I have him listed under the 9th in the "update" list.

apologies - the update list is hard to find being on page 7. Judith, can I suggest that since you have a post on page 1 of this thread, that you edit it to cut'n'paste include the update? - Just an idea
