The Marvin Gaye video is so evocative of the era and the times preceeding it. Wow. It took me aback for a bit. And then, from what I have observed through the young people I am around, the music is as immediate and loved today as it was then. Despair and disrepair in the inner cities has increased to include outlying areas - as they do.

I haven't checked, but there's a good chance that that clip is from the live concert that was included with the Deluxe Edition reissue of 'What's Going On'. The concert on the CD was recorded at the Kennedy Center, May 1 1972. All of which is to say: if you like the sound of what's in that clip, a recording of the gig is available. Or something very much like it.

The clip is from Marvin's next live appearance after the Kennedy Center (Jesse Jackson's PUSH convention, Chicago, 27th September, 1972) and was included on the DVD "The Real Thing in performance 1964-1981". The Kennedy Center show had a larger band & strings - in Chicago it was just organ, bass, drums, guitar, & sax + Marvin on piano.

I sit corrected (but I'm willing to stand if required), though Mr Jamerson does feature on both dates.
