WOMAD Charlton Park 2011

Postby Chris P » Sun Mar 20, 2011 4:46 pm

Vernal equinox tonight, 'super moon' in the sky, the sun's shining, and while Womad drags its heels announcing line up, here are a few said to be performing

Lau
Baaba Maal
Nidi D'Arac
Penguin Cafe
Trio Joubran
Aurelio Martinez
Siberian woman's choir Ayarkhaan
Brassroots
MC Wrec
The Boxettes

& I'd be suprised if the Afrocubists don't show up

Due to domestic problems I can't go this year. It's my fave weekend of the year - the nearest thing this atheist gets to a spiritual experience. Looks a great line-up though. Damn.

That sucks and I'm sorry to hear this - that you aren't going this year, not that you get near to a spiritual experience :)

I always looked forward to your comments on Womad.

Thanks Judith. Investigating the possibility of going just for a day which would be better than nothing!

When I look at the line up it looks like an embarrassment of riches and I feel almost guilty about not going along to it. I am actually put off by the size of it. I find the number of different stages distracting and ....what's that old Big Joe Turner line ?....Like a Mississippi bullfrog, don't know which way to jump. I can't get focussed at these big festivals. There seem to be more festivals than ever this year and one or two with perfectly interesting bills have, I notice, continued advertising in the Sunday supplements for weeks after you'd expect them to have sold out. I had a good time at Rhythms of the World a couple of weeks back and that'll do me for this summer.

i don't think I contribute regularly enough to be considered a forumista, but I'm looking forward to Ebo Taylor. I only came across him last year with 'Love and Death' and think that the title track should become a classic. I was surprised he slipped under my radar, but couldn't find any substantial reference to him on the forum in Charlie's time either.

I have now bought the compilation 'Life Stories' and was a bit disappointed. The original of 'Love and Death' is certainly surpassed by the 2009 recording, benefitting from being souped up by the Berlin Afrobeat Academy (great name) and by Ebo's mournful vocals, seeing from the heart it would appear.

I'm also looking forward to Lau whose Live album is also a classic. I'm not sure what Charlie would have thought about Scottish folk music on his stage, but I hope we could have won him round.

Ballake Cissoko and Vincent Segal must also be worth seeing, but I'm not sure I'll still be up for C W Stoneking.

I first heard Dissidenten on John Peel in the 1980s and it will be interesting to see if they have stood the test of time.

Lau are very very wonderful - I've seen them many times now and they always put on a fab show.

I'm almost certainly going on the Saturday but will miss not being there the rest of the weekend. Enjoy!
