World 2006 = World of Music in US, released March 2007

Postby Charlie » Sun Jun 25, 2006 12:44 pm

This year's volume in the series will go back to the annual title - World 2006 - and will be released on Korova/Warner at the end of July. More details a bit nearer the release date.

On the subject of compilations, I wonder if you've come across Strange Folk which I think is another excellent example of the compiler's art.

I know your usual reponse to folk but you have played Devendra Banhart and King Creosote - both included on this CD, which doesn't seem to have received much airplay. The CD compares tracks from the contemporary
60s with millenium folk (or nu-folk if you must).

It mixes tracks from the under-rated 'HMS Donovan' LP and Forest with Tunng and Alasdair Roberts. I hadn't come across Barry Dransfield's version of Michael Hurley's classic Werewolf before and the cod-folk of Maypole from the Wickerman film is a laugh.

Not yet convinced about the 18th day of May but Tunng compares with The Books and the former's Comments of the Inner Chorus is worth listening to.

I was surprised to see Gnarls Barkley listed and the June CD of the month, so you may be surprised by this.

I am looking forward to Joe Boyd's tenure on Saturdays, particularly since I am part way through White Bicycles (which has appropriately followed Chronicles in my reading list).

But you will leave a large space to fill on Saturday nights.

Hope you are making at least as full a recovery as can be expected.

Charlie, Guess what! I just found your World of Music CD at Borders & it's really great!
It's interesting that it had a sticker on it that said "Borders exclusive."

I like the songs on the first CD the best ,so far. These are just favorites. I like pretty much all of them, though.
Kevin Johansen & The Nada
Think of One
Gipsy Kings
Free Hole Negro
K'naan
Salif Keita
Gipsy Kings kind of has a unique sound that I like. The best I can say about them, is they are up beat & fresh sounding. It makes me curious that a lot of this music has some of the qualities our old 50s & 60s music used to have, but we lost it somehow.

I'm just adding this one, now. I really love the one by Ry Cooder, Muy Fifi. That one sounds good enough to be a COT, for sure( Addictive).

I've been spending time listening to this CD over & over & thought maybe I could fix my writing better. All these songs have got me hooked.
I love this song, La Falla De San Andes by Kevin Johansen & The Nada. It's funny & reminds me of some wonderful music I heard as a kid in Florida. You can see what I wrote about that in the humor( or Humour section to please someone here). Tirar Onda is really a lot of fun to listen to. Today I was out driving on the road & was listening to it, in a snow storm, & was having some fun with it. Rythmic, by Gipsy Kings, is really powerful & the kind of music that makes me feel euphoric. Free Hole Negro is fun to listen to, too. It's sort of like the music I heard in Florida. Sabra Dima, from Morocco is really addicting & gives me chills. It's a lot of fun.
Ry Cooder's song is very addicting. It says he's American. I wonder why I never heard of him before, except by the ones that have talked about him on the forum. He's like an undiscovered treasure & I might be interested in hearing more of what he does. This song, Muy Fifi, is almost like some powerful 60s rock with some color added to it, if that makes any sense. I like the unusual sounding instruments I hear mixed in with it, that sound perfect. I'll try to think of some other good things to say about all this. This is hard. I don't know if any of this is good to say or not.
Ali Farka toure is interesting because it sounds like it could just as well be from Mississippi. I know it isn't but I can see the relationship with music from Africa.
There are others on here that are good, but these are my favorites, along with the list I made at the top. It's hard for me to know what to say that seems intelligent, but this is my impression of them, at least.

Thanks so much for this, Dayna, as your message is the first sign that the album really is out there, in the store.

It took six months of gentle nagging to push Rhino US into releasing the album, and then they said they wanted to delay the release another three months in order to fit it into a Borders campaign in March.

I've been checking the Borders website, which seems to be run in conjunction with Amazon, and there is still no sign of the album there. It's not on the Rhino website either.

So yesterday I wrote to Rhino, asking does this album actually exist?

And your message tells me it does.

I'm enjoying your reactions too.

I did listen to the show where you played music by Oki. It's just very hard to keep everything in my mind right. I knew what is on this CD was similar though. It is very pretty & peaceful sounding. I have never heard of anything like Japanese Reggae!

And this Free Hole Negro, is sort of like a mixture of Cuban & Rap, I think.

This Blue Asia reminds me a little of the Beatles song, Strawberry Fields.

I know I have said I love music with guitar in it, so I like the song that was by Titi Robin, but actually it's just part of it. I really like the way the different things are put together.
I like Souad Massi. I noticed her on 2002 with Bladi & now this one, IIham. I like her singing & the mixture of instruments together.
This isn't really exactly what I want to say. I always just like a good mixture of sounds. I hope all this makes sense. I feel like I can't make my mind help me with what I'm hearing.

Now, I've gotten into this music by Noor; Akhian Ni Akhian. It's really one that gives me chills & has been playing in my head all night, even while sleeping.

I think Amadou & Mariam is very pretty.

This song by Moussu T e Lei Jovents: Bolega Banjo. I can't explain what I find interesting about it, but it's got a unique mixture. Some instruments I've heard all my life, are used in a different way than what I've heard before & it has a nice rhythm.

Also yesterday I saw another one pf the World of Music CDs at Borders. It was with various other World Music CDs, so I moved it toward the front where it can be seen.

Borders

Postby Charlie » Fri Apr 20, 2007 10:20 am

Finally, it's online at www.Bordersstores.com

http://tinyurl.com/2sdydj

But: you can't actually buy it online - you can order it but you have to collect it from a Borders' store. They really make it as hard as possible to get hold of this album in the US

As a special concession, they have allowed Rhino to sell it on its own site. Who's in charge here? The retailer!

Hi Charlie, this is odd. Back in November I went to a nearby Borders and asked them to order your 2006 compilation, and they said they cannot order imports. A month later I received a Borders gift certificate for Christmas, and found a way to use it on-line through Borders.com (they have some kind of deal with Amazon.com.) Anyway, through that site I was able to order your disc and it was sent to my home. I'm kind of surprised why Bordersstores.com wouldn't do the same thing. Oh well.

And for what it's worth, I love the disc; it's really enjoyable.

Finally, if you don't mind my asking, will a 2007 edition be forthcoming?

World 2007

I don't mind at all, Ray.

It's in the works, at the stage when Rhino's licensing department is approaching the 30-plus record labels to ask, can we have the various tracks? Unfortunately, with only two tracks coming from the same source, it's mammoth task with every approach involving negotiations back and forth before the paperwork can be finalised.

If all goes well, it should come out just before WOMAD at the end of July.

By the way, the Borders problem I was describing for World of Music (aka World 2006) applies only in the US. There have been no restrictions on internet mail order purchases anywhere else.
