Sorry to say a copy came and went on eBay about 2 weeks ago. Too late for you now, but it might be worth watching out for another copy to crop up there.

end of the line

Like most compilations, this series was licensed for three years.

When the expiration date is reached, record companies will apply for an extension to the original license only if the sales are strong enough to justify contacting everybody all over again and paying further advances.

That's not the case here - the albums sold less than 3,000 copies each, very disappointing (but inevitable when EMI abandoned the original intention to license for worldwide release, and acquired solely UK rights).

So that is the end of the series - once Amazon and the others have sold their existing stock, they will not be able to source and supply any more.

To my surprise, I found that all five volumes are still on sale at HMV Oxford St on Thursday (Oct 20), filed in Pop Compilations on the ground floor.

EMI has deleted the series, having reached the end of its three year licensing period for the tracks that do not belong to EMI (which owned about half the tracks on both Los Angeles and New Orleans, but only a handful on the other three).

So these copies at HMV are what they have in stock - when they go, there will be no more.

why did you say 'please don't say HMV', Dave?

A copy has cropped up again on eBay UK (along with some other "Sound of the City"s (or should that be "Sounds of the City"?) - £2.99 and eight days until the end of the auction at the time of writing.
