It is the custom of the publishing world to have a regular commentator who expresses opinions which are not necessarily those of the publisher or editor, but serve to provoke further thought and discussion.

Since Howard Male has vacated the position, apparently on a permanent basis, I have invited Gordon to take up the mantle, which he has cautiously agreed to do. He's a busy man, with plenty of other things on his hands and mind.

Meanwhile I've moved into this section some of his previous posts.

Incidentally, the existence of this slot does not preclude Howard returning, should he change his mind/position. Nor does it limit Gordon to posting things here and nowhere else.

On my knees

Apologies for the delay in standing up, but I've almost literally been on my knees since going hillwalking at the weekend. Foolishly, given that I've not been up them thar hills for over four years, I went for Bidean Nam Bian, the highest mountain in Glencoe. And, as ever, I packed too much in my heavy rucksack, even carrying several of Imam Baildi's tunes in my head all the way up and back again.

But, five days later, I've almost recovered. Now that I'm standing up again, I shall try to avoid putting my foot in it or going out on a limb....

Will there be any merchandising material coming our way from the venerable Gordon ? You know, t-shirts, hair-styles, tattoos or piercings, that kind of thing (for the serious Gordon fans).

Indeed, will there be any commentary? Highly entertaining and informative as the CD and live reviews are, we were already getting those*. I was looking forward to some new and amusing angles and debating points on the minor musical issues of the day, a la Howard's much-missed on-line column.

Gordon, your public awaits!

* Personally, I think these should go in the appropriate sections above. No offence, but it's more useful if all reviews of concerts, CDs etc are kept together - in my humble opinion.

Yes, I've had the same thought myself. But I'll never be able to fill the gap that Howard has left. Only Howard can do that. My style is quite different: I make with the funnies; Howard makes with the thoughtful. Howard initiates and provokes; I react. Also, I'm always right!

I'm working on a couple of ideas. But, in the meantime, I've just been trying to keep this section ticking along. Hopefully, before too long, it'll take on a more distinctive shape.

Well, that's one thing we do have in common then, Gordon. Although obviously when we are in dispute, only one of as can be right and that's pretty much always me.

One thing I've never quite understood about human nature is that people are never grateful when you point out they are wrong about something. The logical response would be a polite 'thank you', but it seems to me that the more wrong they are, the angrier and more resentful they become when they are informed of their error. Bloody human beings!
