Why do I love the guitar playing on this song so much?

Why do the blues sound like the blues?
Why do certain chord changes work so well?
Adam (and other wise musicians) will answer any question you can think of about how music works.

Why do I love the guitar playing on this song so much?

I mean it's just someone twangin' some notes right. So how come it gives me the shivers each time I hear it? Especially the solo towards the end.

Any ideas Adam or anyone else?

The denouement after the end of the song is very good too.

Jamie, sometimes you worry too much. She's great, so's the song, that's it.

It's a cultural thing innit.

I just wondered if Adam (or anyone else) has got a theory as to why that particular collection of notes, played in that particular style would exert such a hold on me. I just hear it and feel it, but I'm interested to know if there's a technical explanation.

Maybe it's something to do with the fact that, somewhat unusually, the guitar shares equal billing with the voice, weaving in and out, doing more interesting things in some ways melodically and harmonically than the singer -as opposed to saying something with lyrics. Added to the fact it's got a lovely tone and the player has the great knack of making it all sound improvised and effortless. (Which it probably wasn't but who knows?)

(Anyone we know btw?)

Thanks Hugh, what you say makes sense and is just the sort of thing I was after.

The guitarist is Jerry Miller (not the same Jerry Miller who played with Moby Grape), when I saw Eilen live last year, he all but stole the show.

Yes, I think Hugh's nailed it there. I'd also say that the ole Flamenco chord descent (Am, G, F, E or equivalent) always works. That's why so many people use it!

Thanks Adam. I hadn't thought of it in terms of flamenco before, but now you mention it, it's obvious.

I'm about a minute and a half into it and it is a great sound. Nice bit of dancing, too - is this what goes on at Shout Collective events?

Would it be terribly wrong to say it (the song, not the dancing) reminds me somehow of Sultans of Swing?

Jamie, I've already drawn attention to the very ending (post song) of this video. Take heed.

And you did have this CD with you at our last bash. Maybe it'll get an airing at our next one - which happens to be Saturday, June 23rd, at Limehouse's Jamboree, with extra-special guest, Little George Sueref.
