Marcia is Howard's wife and while Howard takes time out from the Forum I guess he's not going to post about her current exhibition - it's part of a group show in a crypt beneath St Pancras Church on Euston Rd, Ld NW1. Show is called 557 Shadows and the Crypt certainly is a place of shadows - it's huge and dark and a real labyrinth. Of the other artists on show - painting, sculpture, photography - none really held by attention but Marcia is an extremely gifted sculptor, working in a variety of materials (marble, limestone etc) to create very finely crafted objects. As you enter Marcia has carved an ornate and lyrical phallus - I got to wondering if a certain forumista modelled for it - that reminded me of the ancient works one sees in the Naples museum where they house ancient Pompei's erotica.I also liked a marble arm and a cock (the bird not another dick). This exhibition runs until next Saturday 20th and entrance is free.

ah yes, I seem to remember you referring to Howard as something similar in the past

(sorry should've resisted, but if you will set them up with such style...)

I may spend most of the evening wondering what a lyrical phallus looks like.............

Maybe Howard can post a jpeg of Marcia's phallus - it is very lyrical but only an image will do justice to this.

Well, I have to break my silence to thank Garth for his generous and thoughtful review. And of course to post a link, as requested. This is a 40-second slideshow of some of the pieces in situ (starting off with lyrical phallus).

But actually, Garth, you didn’t look quite closely enough, because that cock – wittily called ‘Sunrise - is another phallus! But Marcia actually rather enjoys the fact that some viewers don’t immediately assimilate the fact they are looking at a part cock and part erect penis.

In my admittedly bias view, ‘Sunrise’ is funny hah-hah, funny peculiar, and funny borderline horrific, as well as being beautifully carved. The cock of the walk raises its cock-head to proclaim the arrival of another day in which – as ever - it will reign supreme. The gold-leaf circle that frames its head is both the golden sun of that new day, and the flat stylised halo familiar to any art lover from the myriad haloed heads that populate Byzantine and renaissance paintings. This relief carving is about race, feminism, religion and art itself. It is both the Sun rising, and the Son rising (the Son being the deified Great White Male with his halloed pride and joy of an erection as eternal, immutable and enduring as the Portland stone it is carved from).

Funnily enough, Garth, your friend, the singer Florence Joelle, turned up later in the afternoon. I managed to talk the charming woman into buying a lino print version of ‘Sunrise’ by suggesting that - given it cost no more than an India takeaway for two - how could she go wrong? Amazingly such a crude sales technique worked. But she amused us by stating that the picture would not be hung in her bedroom.

‘557 Shadows’ (a reference to the number of bodies buried in this crypt) continues until next Sunday the 20th.

I also should mention that’s it’s free, and Marcia will be there for just two more sessions; tomorrow between 10am – 4pm, and Fri 19th, 1pm – 7pm, should you want to say hello or talk her into parting with a piece for less than the asking price (which shouldn’t be as hard as you might think!)

I was just hanging out at Jamie's Cumbia Corner, musing about The Rezillos' My Baby Does Good Sculptures, and then thought.........."that's gotta be Howard's favourite record of all time right ?" Oh, it must be!

Many thanks Garth for taking the time to come by the gallery to have a look around and the positive feedback. Yes I’ve had a sale! So that’s my car insurance taken care of and due to Howard’s gift of the gab (no comments) I also sold a lino print of ‘Sunrise’ but I’ve now got a parking ticket to pay. Jeez H Christ.
