Please, SOTW, do me a favour (re. Lenny Henry)

Lenny Henry has gone on national television ("The One Show") claiming that he searched "high and low" for a British Afro-Caribbean blues singer and couldn't find one. Lenny Henry knows perfectly well that his production team interviewed Errol Linton in his home - and then declined to use Errol in the programme. All attempts to find out why have been ignored. I suspect it was because Errol would have made Lenny Henry's attempts to sing and play harmonica look faintly ridiculous. But of course I could be wrong...

If you would like to know why Lenny Henry has so pointedly ignored Errol, who has been playing and singing the blues in the UK for over 20 years, please, I urge you to contact him and ask him. I know a fair few Forumistas enjoy Errol's music, regardless of my involvement with it, a disgraceful injustice has been perpetrated on one of Britain's best musicians - in the name of showbusiness, I daresay. Please, drop a line and ask why, and perhaps you could report back if you get any responses.

Thank you.

I've also sent a response. I did hear Lenny Henry on the Paul Jones Radio 2 show last Monday talking about the series he's got coming up. He did talk about Jeremiah Marques, and mentioned a couple of others (sorry, only half-listening, but the programme's on line), but there was no mention of Errol that I heard. Paul Jones did have "Mama Said" as one of his albums of the year when it was released, so more's the pity he didn't pick up on his omission.

I will drop a line but what was the nature of the programme they were trying to put together? I don't really understand.

It is an interesting question, mind you. Is Errol the one and only?

I too have added my salvo to the barrage. According to Lenny Henry (writing on the production company's web-site):-
“I wanted to know if there were any unsung heroes of black blues who came from the British Isles and not from America.”
But apparently/allegedly excluding Errol Linton...

O.K. I'm now in a position to answer my own question, having done a bit of research.

It's a crap concept. An already over-exposed celebrity fan talking speculative drivel with predictably high profile contributors. It looks suspiciously like Lenny Henry doing his Hugh Laurie thing, the programme being a launch vehicle for a new career thread. I should admire him as a man who believes there's nothing he can't do, but I've never been able to warm to him.

No response here, either. Disappointing, as I hold nothing against LH. It wouldn't cost him anything to make a simple, factual, statement on the matter.
