A telling paragraph is the reaction of the England 2018 bid to the programme:-
We stand by our previous position that the BBC's Panorama did nothing more than rake over a series of historical allegations, none of which are relevant to the current bidding process. It should be seen as an embarrassment to the BBC.
The allegations, although they refer to the period 1989-1999, are still very much relevant because all three officials allegedly involved have a vote on Thursday when the host for the 2018 World Cup is decided. The programme is an embarrassment to FIFA which has tried to kick the allegations into the long grass. When it is reported that some of the "payments" (bribes?) have been channelled through Liechtenstein one does tend to be suspicious. The whole process of bidding for the Olympics and World Cups is rather sordid and is an open invitation to small-scale corruption if not venality. Why don't the powers-that-be just allocate the events on a rota basis and avoid the unseemly and expensive circus of mounting a bid?
